the issue was definitely Alternator related.
I was able to charge my Optima and it took a full charge, when I started the car I could see the battery voltage dropping and the charge was going quickly.
I recharged the battery and 2 days ago I installed the new OEM alternator.
That thing is a bitch to get out.
Tim (Newcastle) managed to break one of the plastic 90 degreee clips that comes out of the intake rubber accordian so I had a vacuum line that I couldn't plug in.
I fired the car up and the battery voltage was staying steady at 14.4!
I threw in a new fitting today ($10 part from mazda) and the battery / alternator seem to be getting along once again.
I had the stereo turned up to 26 and the voltage was solid at 14.4
My guess is the voltage regluator in the alternator kicked the bucket. One of these days I'll take it apart and trouble shoot
