I'm down for Nov 2. Cruise. I'm off work at 7pm that day so evening cruise is game for me...

On the exhaust thing I know no camera will ever do the sound justice. But daily driving a 98 cobra with long tube headers no cats or resonators or mufflers just a X pipe is bleedingly loud. So I took the muffler off. It is loud but as for me just about as loud as I'd like to go. It drones a bit but that's cause its dumping right at the trunk so it resonates all over the trunk. Extending the pipe to exit at the bumper should take care of that. Hopefully I can do that today...

Hey guys reporting back in. Its been almost a week with no muffler and I can still hear...lol I was able to at least put a 90* pipe on the end and angle it slightly downward. So now it dumps to the ground just behind the driver rear wheel, it took care of most of the droning. The wife has been on the road with me and she likes the sound, says its not too bad or "ricy like the wannabe civics" her words! She has also been in another car and says its not obnoxious loud for other drivers.

 

Pretty surprising, I have a ap midpipe with the stock exhaust and I am pretty sure it is annoying for other people. It is definitely what I would consider loud but I know that's different for everyone. Even with a cat on(do you have a cat?) I would think no mufflers would be louder than my car.

 

with the stock muffler? I still have the stock midpipe with intacked cat. I guess everyone has a different level for "loud" but as far as me goes its at the limit for sound. I'm not gonna lie that it is loud but to me not excessive. I haven't gotten any weird looks yet or cops that say anything...

 

I still float around here and every now and then. I got pretty fed up with this site in general. (everytime someone asks a question it's "search search search you freaking noob, i'm so uber leet and you are lame") type stuff. You'd think we had bentleys. You said you were selling a RB MP? I might be interesting in that actually.

I think it must just be really loud to me, I bet if I heard yours it would be crazy loud. Mine just has a bad note to it, either something is rattling on the outside of my muffler or something is inside it making it sound really bad. I have no cat so it cant be that, but one side of the muffler sounds like somethings jumping around inside it.

 

thats the thing i hate about forums, yeah i have the mid pipe. i had it on my 8 for 2 weeks, its 270 usually but im selling for 200. . let me know what you think

 

That rattle must be annoying maybe its one of the baffles inside the muffler itself...


... ill tell u in the city were I'm accelerating and decelerating it sounds nice I like the exhaust tone and the pop but on the highway once I get past 60ish it get very monotone and drones a bit. I yet haven't made it exit at the bumper so that might be it. With the 90*bend it took a lot of the original drone I had away. Ill make a video of it tomorrow since I'm off and ill post. Being honest although I really like the sound I may have a universal muffler can Installed later.

P.S. a.mair and drift I understand the noob questions thing complete and I would like to apologize if at any point in a post I made u guys feel that way. I try to keep in mind things like this since I come from another forum where I knew quite a bit from and helped the new guys out to this 8 which honestly I know nothing but basics about.... that being said the search works and helps since I have about 30 bookmarks on my browser just from this forum. Lol

 

Yea I was thinking something may have come loose in there. I thought about pulling the mufflers off to try and shake it out but the chances of that working are slim to none. I think I would have to cut open the mufflers and get it welded back together which is just not worth it. I just went out and checked the heat shield and that doesn't seem to be making contact with the mufflers anywhere so it can't be that. When the exhaust gets hot I can tap it with my foot on the drivers side and hear the noise but only when its hot.

 

I think it might be that weird S bend leading to the exit pipe. It seems to just be crimped on and with heat it may expand and come loose. For the trouble of taking off cutting and welding I would rather buy a new cat back.

I will try and get a video of mine, I have one where the camera was attached to my bumper but needless to say that one was extremely loud since it was right next to the tailpipe the whole time.

Yours doesn't seem crazy loud but hopefully the video I make will be decent and we can compare.

 

My camera couldn't pick up the rattle very well, but I did notice that when it rattles the exhaust shakes. What could that mean?

Here is what my car sounds like. The camera I used is from about 2000 so it is pretty bad quality, but it captures the tone well enough. It is too raspy/ricer for my tastes but I think with an exhaust it could fix that.

 

i see what you mean by raspy. that can get more annoying than just plain loud. mine is not raspy just a deep loud grunt. getting a catback may make it worse since the muffler is about the only thing stoping most of the noise. i think the sound your getting is your mid pipe. any exhaust experts or with more experience are more than welcome to correct me.... i think a deferent mid pipe will help the car sound better. talk to a.mair since he has one for sale.

i dont even wanna know what mine would sound like if i take the cat off and leave it with no muffler... eeekkk....

 

Well he is selling one with no resonators so it would sound worse than this I think. Mine has 2 resonators but the packing usually melts within 15-20k miles and mine has started to I think.

It gets really loud at about 4k rpms and that noise should get fixed by getting rid of the stock exhaust according to other people.

 

you gotta love rotary for melting ****...lol i have just taken a look at a few vids on youtube with the rx8 on the ap dual res pipe with stock exhaust and they all seem to have that raspy sound on higher rpms. now i had a few vids on my favs and i think these may be what your looking for...all with the ap dual res. midpipe:

They all get a bit raspy in the higher rpms but what it should fix is the sound at 4k rpms. If you watch my video when I first take off the volume starts to go up then its like BZZZZ for a second at :31 then the volume starts to slowly go up. That sound is very annoying when you are driving around the city because it lasts much longer if you are just driving around without gunning it.

 

the rotary engine is just a raspy engine at high revs so not much that we can do, hell even mine gets raspy over 5k but i did hear the "rattle"... sounded at about 3500 to 4000. hopefully a good catback can kill that off. mine drones a lot at that same rpm while on the highway. its not really a rattle on mine but down under that its deap and poppy and up past it its a nice high scream but at that range its just blaaaahhhh... sadly its the cruise zone. that same zone is what may make me get a catback soon.

 

Yea I can deal with the rasp at the high revs.

I got a decent video of the rattle/ping sound now, it is definitely coming from the drivers side. I have gotten under there and shook the exhaust different ways and can't see it hitting anything that would make that noise. If I take my foot and lightly kick it up then I get the rattle on the drivers side. I've felt all around between the heatshield and the muffler and there is a good amount of space in all areas.

 

definitely a rattle inside the muffler from what ur saying. U need a catback
