The fuel filter is not a canister type or inline type and is part of the fuel pump assembly. It takes a special tool to open it. I have the tool but does any one really know what to look for and how to clean it? Do a search and you will find the location and the way to clean it (there is a nice diy on it and a whole discussion).........Don't get in a hurry it will take some time. I doubt very much that it is the filter but it could be. The tool is available for use.

Oh yea, if it turns out to be the fuel pump, I have a loaner while you obtain a new one (filter included). If you come get the tool I will explain of a couple of things to be careful of on the interior of the assembly

Don't start taking things apart that you don't need to.
Clean the MAF reinstall it. Lightly lube the small o-ring on the MAF before installation.
Connect electrical harness.
Turn the ignition key to the on position. Rapidly step on and off the brake pedal until the oil pressure gauge on the dash sweeps to the right and then back. Turn ignition off.
Go ahead and start car.
Take the car for a test drive.
See if that cures your ailment.

Phil I suggested looking at the fuel filter when he didn't have a CEL, and just recommend changing as he said he never did. Now that there is a CEL it's probably not the filter, but performing maintenance is always wise

But being an in the tank pump assembly. I suggest the novice not dive into something that has not been verified yet. The filters rarely clog.

But I do understand what your saying Ray.

But ultimately it doesn't matter, if someone has an issue I throw in my $.02 cause after 25+ years in the industry there is the off chance I may be right once in a while (sarcasm applied here). Example a clogged fuel filter would restrict the flow of fuel starving the engine and not allowing it to develop power. Now as he admitted to never changing it made sense to atleast check it ok as he had no CEL at that point. See I come from the pre- ECM era and there are younger folks that do not understand the fundamental concepts of how an engine works. So there may be those that would appreciate suggestions that are either free or cheap of things to check and those that maynot. If you do not like my opinion that is fine don't pay it any mind but as you commented off of something I said I repsonded and that can result in whats called "brain storming"

So while I asked a serious question you didn't answer. You were given the chance to enlighten me, do the 8's have a limp mode when the oil level is not up to par?

I could foresee myself owning an 8 or whatever it is Mazda releases and am more the willing to learn cause "ya can" teach an old dog new tricks
I was just pointing something out to you.

Check the oil for coolant come on people

How, exactly, are you planning on doing that? Are you expecting the coolant to adhere to the dipstick?

I have some personal experience with the fuel filter/pump and know that without a little experience it is not a good idea to screw with it (on the 8). Normally it is a good idea to change regularlly on most cars but with the 8 a little prudance is necessary.

I just wanted Den to be careful with the MAF cuz it's easy to clean but if you use the wrong stuff or not treat in correctly then you can make matters worse.

This weekend the garage is only open for emergencies.

Den: The nitros master and his side kick will be in town soon. If you would like to talk to them let me know and I will set it up. In the mean time a post to Easy_E1 (side kick) would be in order........Just don't do as he does cuz Mazda is out of manifolds

^ ???

You didn't upset me. Trust me. A simple thing you should know about me, whenever I respond, ALWAYS FIRST ASSUME SARCASM. I don't generally get pissed off too easy.

Oh and you'll be quite happy to know I have starter some FI negotiations with my wife. There is a seller who might have the perfect option for me. I don't want to post what it is here. But can I mow your lawn to help pay for it please? I need some supplemental income to cover the cost otherwise no dice.

Hey BHR, need any design work?
