New here and need some help please
Hey everyone, new here. Just bought a 04 rx8, doing a couple touch ups on it before i get it on the road and just looked under my car and it seems i have a tranny leak 
i have a 6 speed manual, i know there is no dip stick and the only way to check the level is the top bolt (havent located that bolt yet). My tranny housing is covered in nasty stuff so it is hard to see where its coming from. Please help, looking to get her on the road this week. Hoping its something i can do myself. Again, new here and looking forward to chatting with all you guys. (Tried putting this in tech forum but said i dont habe access?)

Tranny doesn't leak that often... but oil pan leaks are very common. Is it gear oil? It will smell much different than engine oil
Often a rear main seal leak will drip out of the bellhousing as well.
check the oil pan....

It is gear oil, smells very different. And check the engine oil pan or tranny? New to this car so not sure where everything is located, ive been wrenching a 85 fiero for a year. Way different...
Likely need to pull the tranny out then. It is likely the front seal on the tranny.
You might want to check the neutral and backup switches to make sure they aren't leaking...
or that someone hasn't overfilled it and it is leaking out of the vent

How do i check the switchs? And where would i be able to tell if its overfull? Sorry, dont know location of anything on it
The fill and drain bolts are on the driver side, the switches have wires leading to them. An early step would be to clean the trans (brake or engine cleaner) and then look for the new mess.
Dannobre is right, some fill the trans through the shifter hole and just "measure" to get it right. That is a really easy way to overfill. Cleaning is the best way to see where oil is coming from.

One common cause of trans leaks is if someone reused old washers on the fill and drain bolts on the trans. They can be used once or twice, but after that you're gambling on whether they'll seal. Best to get new ones, they're like a dollar from Mazda.

Update
Hey guys, so i jacked my car up today and checked out the tranny leak. Im 100% sure it is leaking from the reverse/neutral switch (on pass side). Am i correct that its the reverse switch? So i will order the part when someone confirms that i have the right switch. Will also get a new drain plug, looks a little gummy and wet there to but not as bad. Figured i would drain it all and then work on the switch. Another thing...does anyone know where the connector to that switch is? Tried following the wires and couldnt reach much farther.

Thanks for wire location, and its leaking out of the black silicone cap on the back, its bulging and i can use it like a rubber pump and pump fluid out of a little slit in it. Think i will just replace it and the drain plug. And do a full flush at the same tims. The plug is 1$ at mazda said earlier? Does anyone know if dealers carry the switch?
