Picking up an 04 6mt, heated leather, supposedly nav somewhere behind dash, tomorrow. Could be a unicorn, according to the owner it pulls strong and according to Mazda it's on the original engine at 110k. The seller's throwing in an extra engine block sans alternator for 300 just in case. The plan is for my daughter to rebuild it while she learns to drive and undoubtedly destroys the clutch and engine in it. We all know how plans are.
Had a 79 12a, and 84 GSL-SE, and an 88 convertible, but it's been since the arrival of the above mentioned child since I've had them. Looking forward to getting a little greasy, learning something, and maybe doing some autoX at Pitt Race.
Kudos to the moderators and the many experts for sharing and documenting their knowledge (even if there are to many words)
Took the girl for a ride, had a long discussion on clutch smells, unwittingly (or witlessly) reversed into an iced over driveway to turn around, got stuck, witnessed the awesome pushing power of teen girl. Did some reading. Stopped before I got any more discouraged.
Impressions: no power steering is HEAVY. Only a problem in low speed parking lot stuff, but it is always top of mind. It's loud. Not mind curdling, but cheap cat back? Check. It's squirrelly. Cheap lowering springs? Check. Can't see a thing, low beams pointed at the ground, highs over the horizon. Will be following the directions in the DIY thread very early tomorrow, as well as cleaning/pulling the battery and cleaning the power steering sensors via the instructions provided in the threads. Thanks for the help.
