Well, the producers were looking for a white Series II RX-8 in Southern California. I thought it would take them a little longer to make these comparison. I guess they settled with an R3. Nice choice of color, too!

And you would think that us SoCal guys would spot and post this first. LOL! Thanks for opening this thread.

 

I would probably Agree with Todd more in this one.. However, From driving both the Rx8 and the FRS AT that location.. Malibu canyon... The Frs/brz would be amazing with better tires and wheels.. It does however need more something over 5k rpm. I would LOVE to see a vortech super charger set up on that it would give it some good low end power and not complicate things on the higher end of the rpm range.. sort of keep it predictable. The RX8 for me is a perfect fit.. that's why I have one.. The S2k feels very nice if you drive one.. The turn in is very nice and it is very solid feeling.. But still the RX8 is still more forgiving to me.. For me... I would have to go with S2k - RX8 - BRZ/FRS.. Only because the S2k has less engine issues.. haha..

 

My thoughts are that BRZ/FRS is gay and the S2000 is a roadster. I pick the R3 (big surprise).

I think that if they would have used the Blue R3 it would have won

I have not driven an S2000 or FRS/BRZ so my vote is very biased as well... Useable back seats and rotary engine make this an easy choice for me :D...RX8 wins everytime!

 

Great video. Such a close comparison it's hard to choose. Like they said...it's just splitting hairs. Kinda wish they would have used a BRZ instead of the scion though.

 

Yep - I was watching this last night. Fun series of videos too.

The R3 sure looks big compared to the other two. . . made me want to pick up a S2000 on the side. Nice to know the Rx8 can still play with the new kids.

I've driven all three actually.
the FRS/BRZ is easier DD car, good gas millage, pretty torquey lower rpm.
the S2000 is very lightweight, and if you are convertible kinda person you will like it, the engine sounds okay.

 

Great video! I've driven all three as well on laguna seca and just on regular roads. All good cars in my opinion, kind of the same with power at mid to high rpm's and all relatively lightweight cars for what they are. Biggest thing in my opinion is that the sk2 is a roadster, the brz might as well have been a two seater like other sports cars while the rx8 has useable rear seats. That does explain the longer wheel base and some of the weight difference which was a little disappointing that it wasn't brought up in the video. I agree that the BRZ/FRS needs more power stock but the aftermarket will definitely pick up on that. Both the s2k and the frs will have good aftermarket backing which enthusiast will enjoy while the rx8 will be left behind in the dust for that for obvious reason. I do agree though in stock form, the s2k has a larger advantage in the performance aspect than the frs and rx8 but no one took in to consideration that the rx8 is not just a sports car, its an everyday car that is useful which can't be set in a true sports car category in my opinion.

 

Pretty solid video...I enjoyed watching it, and having driven all three cars, the hosts were pretty spot on. The 8's definitely not for everyone, but those who 'get it', really enjoy it....I know I love mine. I'd love to see them take modified versions of the same cars with a similar state of tune back, and see how they perform there, as well. It'd be entertaining to see what the hosts think with that change in character.

 

I agree too, the parameter of the test precluded evaluating the 8's extra benefits such as the extra seats and the fact it's not just a roadster(although they have their place). So, 2 cars designed more than 10 years ago are still better...hmmmmm.

 

Saw this over at the BRZ FRS forum.

I say the RX8 is the best. However, for a daily driver I have to vote BRZ. Why?

S2k is a great car and may be more fun with the wind in your hair.

 

I was gonna say the same thing. If you are only thinking in terms of a DD, the RX-8 is just too expensive to run and maintain as opposed to the BRZ.

 

Fair review, good cars all, but they say it many times... RX-8 refined, S2000 power, FR-S - the 'new' has worn off already. Given the FR-S will cost you dearly, the hidden truth is the a good copy of either of the others is the frelling deal.

 

For me the S2K and FRs are too small. I cant fit in either. While this is ok in the S2K it's unforgivable in the FRS. If you're gonna make a car that small make it a 2 seater. It's the size of a Moata for petes sake! I can't fit my 6 yo son in the back seat of the FRS. If the FRS was larger and had more power I'd be all over it. The big question is, is it tuneable. Did Toyobaru leave some power for the tuners. These types of cars need that IMO. That's where the RX8 fell down the hardest. If it had been easily tuneable more people would have purchased them IMO. Even if Mazda had gotten say 20 more hp and 15 more lbs for the R3 it would've made a huge difference. I wish they had the resources/foresight to improve the renesis power wise while the 8 was still young over the years. By not addressing the engine Mazda was killing the 8. The easiest fix would've been a turbo, which some may or may not agree with. I like the revability of the engine I just wasnt 30 more hp and 40 more lbs.
Mazda should look at adding small electric motors to the rear wheels to help with low end torque and fuel economy.

 

Nicely done video. I've never driven the brz/frs or the s2000, so not sure how they would compare. But from a purely practicality standpoint, ie. ability to fit adults in the back seats, I would pick the Rx8. As for gas mileage, a new brz is going to be around 27-30 (after tax), compareted with 17-20k for a clean R3. You can buy a lot of gas for 10k.

Interesting. Thats 3.6 years of gas for me. Probably less depreciation on the R3 to... if you can find one in good shape. Makes me happy I kept mine.

 

Clean, low mileage R3's are all over the place. Not to mention you can get a basically new Touring for 17k or so and make it easily equal or better handling wise to the R3. Bilstein HD's and good springs are cheap.

Also remember, maintaining the 8 will be much more expensive. Way more expensive tires, plugs, coils, wires, and oil changes much more often, plus about 10 less mpg. I think if you look at total ownership cost, it would be closer than you think, even after the initial savings of getting a used series II 8.
