Has anyone had their calipers powdercoated? I know people just simply see this as a DIY paint project at home, but I'm a little hesitant to do so, and heard this could be an alternative. What do you think?

 

Thats definately one way to go, but I can tell you from personal experiance that most powdercoating takes some time. The turn around on my wheels was about a month, so just be prepared to be without brakes for some time. Painting only holds up your car for one day versus up to a month powdercoating.

 

Don't waste your money.

I just painted my calipers two weeks ago and they still look tight. I took two hours to complete the project. It's easier if you put your car on a lift vice jacking up one side at a time... Good luck

how long did it take you to do them?

 

I painted mine a few months back. Powder coating would hold up better over the long haul but I could not be without my car for an extended period. Here is a thread with some pics of what I did back in February.

powder coating is a great option but you have to take the calipers off the car (ie clear out the entire break system).

also turn around shouldnt be that long, my wheels took 2 or 3 days to be done.

 

nice pix pdxhak. I have a black rx8 also but was thinking of doing red calipers.....have you seen any pics of other black 8s with painted calipers?

 

I have seen red in person but it was a bad paint job so not a good example. I'm sure if you run some searches you will find other members that have painted their hubs and calipers.

I coated my rx7's calipers as well. To do powdercoat, parts must be disassembled to their simplest metal form...no moving parts, no bearings, plastic or rubber parts in or on them. IT is a simple matter afterwards. I could turn around a set of brake calipers in a couple of days.

I like the wheels a lot, but they really are too small for my liking now that they are on the car. I will likely eventually sell them for something in 17 or 18, perhaps a bit wider too. Normally for powdercoat work i request that the customer send the part in already disassembled if possible, which allows faster turnaround and a much better rate. When they cannot/will not, I will sometimes do the extra work for them at added cost. In the case of single piston brake calipers, assuming the pistons move freely, it'd be about an additional $25/set (2) fee for disassembly/reassembly of the internals.

 

I powdercoated mine back when I first bought the car. I absolutely love them. They are super easy to clean. Pretty much just spray them off. here is the link to the thread:

I had some stuff powder coated. It cost $150 bucks and I got the parts back 6 hours later.
