Well, you know rebuilding a Rotary is soooooo easy, all you need is a rebuild kit

This may be a little off topic for this thread, but while we are talking about rebuilds;

Let's say some young guy with pretty good mechanical aptitude, and the basic automotive tool set wanted to begin learning how to do proper rebuilds with perhaps trying to make some money doing it professionally.
What do y'all think the initial investment would be?

The tool investment is not much, Pineapple Racing has most of the specific tools (13B flywheel stop, coolant system pressure tester, v blocks, etc. ) needed. A couple hundred at most. The rest is all basic hand tools. The most important aspect is skill, knowing how to spec which parts should and should not be reused, how to cut side seals, etc. And then of course the assembly should be balanced (in my opinion) and very specific tooling is needed for that. But many rebuilders do not balance the engines so that is debatable. But it is not easy IMO, there are a lot of tricks to the trade.

Yeah my buddy has dove head first into it and is doing well now after 10 builds or so, but it is not easy and there are growing pains that he had to learn from. And he is a very meticulous and experienced guy mechanically.

I have participated in a few Renesis builds and I have rebuilt quite a few Honda engines and a few GM small blocks, and I am not ready to rebuild my own Renesis yet. I do plan on getting an RX-8 with a blown engine and giving it a shot though eventually. There is a 2005 WWP in good condition with a blown engine (says the owner) for $1100.00 in town right now, my buddy went to check it out today. We shall see.

and yes these motors are extremity easy to tear down and rebuild there are like 5 moving parts lol

just pick up a no-compression renny and tear into it on your weekends, they are light don't take up to much room and if you clean every part on it shine it up good you can use it as a display or a night stand

also in putting in a 2.5L twin turbo 1jz


stock Renny
$1500 first rebuild +1500 second rebuild 200,000km/ 125,000mi best case scenario
$3000-$3500 maybe machining is needed,,,,, you still have 230hp and 160tq


so far I have spent close to $2800 and I expect to start and drive it with in 3-4 months with a total cost for around $3500 to $4200,

after spending say $5000 on a swap to 1jzgte you get a motor that will run for 300,000km/ 187,000mi reliably, twin turbo, and makes 280hp with 260tq

thats only 2g's more and you pick up 100tq and 50hp on the oem boost setting with a 1jz or 2jz the sky is the limit....

Also where are you getting these figures for the 1JZGTE? Everything I can find states 206HP and 260 lb/ft at the crank. Or is yours the latest version?

Well since your is the twin turbo variant then from what I see it is the older version of the 1JZGTE so your numbers are a bit skewed. The newer version 1996 and up is a single turbo VVTi engine from what I can see.

Also, there was a pretty serious recall that needed to be done on the older twin turbo versions of the 1JZGTE, I hope you have one with the recall done on it, otherwise oil can fill your turbos and they won't last long.
