Burning carpet glue overpowered the smell of fuel. Keep in mind that is all external. so you would only smell it on the outside of the car.

But its an uncatted rotary so its hard to tell whats what.

So Shady and I took a look tonight and it doesn't look like it will be too bad actually. It is the line that goes from the fuel pump all the way to the front though. I'm just going to have to get it in the air and knock it out.

 

where it plugs in on the tank .............. do you have another assembly you can fit to make sure it isn't the male part that is causing it ?

 

At the pump there is the standard plastic fuel line but it is crimped to a hard line that runs up the frame rail to the front. It's only $80.00 so I am replacing it regardless. The nipple on the pump itself looks fine and there are no cracks, etc. But if for some weird reason it is the problem then I already have a new pump waiting at the parts store for me that I had pre-ordered.

I would take the opportunity to make improvements.

 

Nothing to improve on unless you go for a crazy setup with AN fittings and an external fuel pump. Which really is pointless unless you plan on tracking your car.

Upgrading to a return type system is a big problem on this car.....it causes more problems than you think..unless you go to a surge tank setup or a fuel cell you are better off staying with the returnless system

Okay, so I replaced the line and it was still leaking in the same place. I pulled the pump, installed one of the back up stock pumps I had laying around, and then ran the pump and there were no leaks at all. I examined the pump nipple and there are no cracks, etc. But with it out of the car and in the sun, I noticed the nipple did have a slight curve to it.

So, I removed the top section from one of the backup pumps and installed it on the my assembly with the Walbro in it. I reinstalled the assembly and all is good. I am not sure how all of the sudden it started leaking after three years and I don't know is that nipple was warped from day one or if it happened over time. It was a brand new OEM pump assembly from BHR.

When looked at like this you can see the curve in the nipple. So basically I could have saved myself the $90.00 on the fuel line but at least I have a new fuel line in and I am glad I had the extra pump laying around to steal the top from otherwise I would have had to buy a new pump.

You can have it man. I just need to find a box for it, it's an awkward item. The install wasn't too bad, but getting the line out of the clips without breaking them was a bit tough.

 

Did you melt the pop off valve on the new fuel pump assembly?

Yeah I just put the top part with the nipple on it. I put it on my assembly with the Walbro already in it.

 

How long have you had your Walbro? I've had mine for about 2 years now with very minimal driving, (approx 10000km/6200mi). When I floor it, seems to be worse in hotter weather with the engine hot, my fuel pressure take a pretty good dive, from about 58psi at constant throttle to about 53-54 psi at WOT. It is not affecting my AFR's yet but I'm thinking of grabbing the Aeromotive pump motor from Charles to get the pressure back up to a constant 60psi all around.

 

Yikes, that is scary, 54psi is the minimum and that is stock. My Walbro is 3 years old, I have about 16,000-20,000 miles on it. My minimum pressure is 58psi and max is 65psi at redline. But generally at idle and under normal driving it stays at 60psi. Your AFR's at WOT are good?

 

Yes AFR's are good, I am still on early stages of MM tuning at the moment so I am running probably a bit rich, but it is just recently that my pressure has been dropping like this.... aeromotive may be ordered before the end of the day

 

Well IIRC, as boost rises your injectors flow less, so it's important to have adequate pressure under boost. It's also important to get your injectors flow tested at 60psi if you really want to know what they are going to flow on our cars. Most of the time they test them at much lower pressures than what we see.

You definitely want to get that sorted ASAP.

 

Yeah if I recall, Charles quit selling the Walbro shortly after I bought mine because they were not being produced to the same standard as they had been in the past, so chances are I just got a shitty pump motor.... good news is a new one is only $175 and simple to replace, just gotta burn this tank of gas down now...
