Brand new owner...FINALLY! (05 WWP GT 33k)

This was my first mod on the car. After breaking several of the pop tabs on the passenger side, I left the piece on for the drivers side and was able to get it easily with my air saw. A dremel tool would've worked well also.

Yes, Jim, I cut a hole in my front bumper cover and installed a 4" ram air duct directly into the OEM air box. It has lowered my intake temperatures to 5 degrees above ambient outside temperature.

 

I did this as an emergency measure on a hot track day. My temp on the first run hit 230, on subsequent runs after this mod peak of 219 (and it got hotter outside later in the day). Not bad for 5 minutes work.

As far as intake temp, I read IAT at 2-3F above ambient at speed (60mph+) with the stock intake.

 

Your oil temps were 230F? Or coolant temps?

 

Sorry, coolant. I was skeptical, but nothing else changed throughout the day, so.... All runs logged with AccessPort.

 

for those of you further north, I would consider creating some sort of "cover" that takes up half of the oil coolers for the winter.

Not sure about most of you, but I have trouble getting my oil temps up to a good level in the winter time without this "mod". Creating a little "shield" that blocked half of each of my coolers helped.

 

So there's no thermostat for the oil coolers?
This may be the reason Mazda designed them the way they are. I am sure there is enough cooling for street use. Track use is different... I guess you could also use tape to reduce cooling in colder temps.

 

I'm pretty sure there are thermostats. We just had a really cold winter last yr.

Doesn't oil still pass through the top portion of the coolers regardless of if the thermostats are open or closed?

 

There is always oil flowing through oil coolers partially when cold, the thermostat is basically a standard restrictive flow type.

 

I cut out as much as I could still leaving a bit of the curved lip for stength. The screen I oversized to allow a gap between it and the vents to prevent loss of airflow from debris and to absorb rocks or anything else from the tire. And it turns out it looks cool lol. My weapon of choice was an angle grinder with cut off wheel. Then just clean the surfaces and use silicone to hold the screen in place.
