He could run 275/35 no problem. Only issue is the heights of 255/40 tires. May be fine. May not be.

Come to think of it, I did have some light rubbing on the rear driverside fender when I had 255/40 on stock height with passengers. My offset is just a little lower.

So in the last year (since I got my RX8), I've experimented with various tire sizes. I've done 225/40/18, 235/40/18 (these two sizes just came on the car from the previous owner and had way too much stretch for my taste), and then 245/40/18 (still not quite wide enough for me) and most recently 255/45/18 (I'm liking these two on the rear so far - will probably put them on the front as well for a square setup, which we all know is best).

All the while, I've had TEIN S.TECH springs and 25mm Garageline spacers (except can't currently use the spacers with the 255/45's due to their width, but I'm flaring my rear fenders next week with a professional fender flaring tool so they'll soon fit). Here are my pics for your comparison:

Where is the question there? Good luck with those in the front

The fender won't be your problem on either end. The problem will be where the bumper bolts up front and especially rear.

Oh there wasn't a question, I was just throwing my experimentation and subsequent findings up there as a visual aid for anyone curious. And yeah, I'm pretty leery about fitting the 255/45's in the front, I will try swapping the current rear ones to the front and driving around on them for a day or two before I put that size on the front. If they just absolutely won't work even after extensive fender-rolling/flaring, when I do eventually replace them, I will simply install the HTR Z-III's which come in 245/45 (the HTR Z-II's don't for some reason :/ ), which will remove a little more wheel gap but not be any wider.

As a note, I've hit the biggest dips and speed bumps around my home area and the 255/45's in the rear don't currently rub anywhere no matter what. These are the same dips and speed bumps that did make the 245/40's rub on the rear with the wheel spacers, but no problems with the 255/45's with no wheel spacers and a +45 offset. I figured I'd mention that since you mention that 255/40's can cause problems due to their height in your UnHellaFlush Wheels thread, although I'm not sure it's completely relevant here or not.

Yeah, after inspection I can see that the bumper tab issue is going to be a bitch. However, I am in a unique situation to aggressively tackle this with limited consequences; in a normal situation you'd have to worry that if you chopped up your bumper mounting tabs too much, maybe your bumper would be permanently loose and just sort of hang there, right? But I just recently drove up to the Extreme Dimensions warehouse in Fullerton, CA (I've recently moved from Hawaii to San Diego) and picked up a brand-new Duraflex Raven rear bumper which is now sitting in my guest bedroom awaiting painting and installation along with my new side-skirts. And my current stock bumper is all screwed up anyway, so I don't care if it gets more messed up. It will be my experimentation platform in the coming weeks.

And if I somehow manage to damage the tabs on the car/fender itself to the point that the bumper won't attach to them in a stock fashion, then when I take the new bumper to a body shop to have it painted, drilled, and mounted (it has no mounting holes yet, they must be measured and custom-drilled), I'll just have the body shop apply their expertise and attach it in some other way that is secure enough and also allows me to retain my flared fenders and wheel spacers without wheel-rub.

Also, I recently purchased a fender rolling/flaring tool online (pic attached to this post), so wish me luck. Maybe it will be an unmitigated disaster and I'll have to drive around with my bumper sticking off of my car at some weird angle, but I'm going for it whether it turns out to be a success or a cautionary tale. I'll post pics and updates, of course.

Tall *** tires can cause issues in the front. The rear is more forgiving because you don't turn those wheels. A fender roll won't fix the issue in the front either.

I keep reading conflicting report and I searched pretty extensively through this thread (and others), but I'm wondering about the widest you could fit with stock EVERYTHING.

I have 245/40/18's and am looking to go a bit bigger. I read that one person fit 285/30's, and a couple people have fit 275/35, both claiming no rub, but I think I'd be alright with 265/35's, and they're relatively common (this one being the one I'm looking at: https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...romSurvey=true).

So, "Will It Fit?"

Subsidiary query, I'm looking to go with TEIN in the near to mid future, would they conflict with the 265/35's (providing they even fit on stock)?

EDIT: Right, forgot to add, I'm aware it will be over the size of the rim, so it's not going to be having any more "grabbing" effect, I just wanted slightly wider tires that fit stock without compromising performance. Too much, at least.

On stock wheels? What's the point you're trying to make?

Will this fit??

Okay guys, I am new here and I got my 8 last march.. Its finally time to get some wheels and im going to be purchasing some XXR 530's really soon. Im going to be lowered on Godspeed coilovers about 1.5" - 2" drop as well. Im not looking to be slammed on the ground either. My question is which setup will sit better on the car, and yes I know I will have to roll the fenders for both setups.

The specs on the wheels are:

F: 18x8.75 +20
R: 18x9.75 +20

Tires:

Option#1:

F 205/40
R 225/40

Option#2:

F 225/40
R 245/40

Thanks for the help!

Different aspect ratios will play havoc with the ABS.

Those wheels will look like shut unless "slammed to the ground." Hellaflush + not slammed = mexiflush

So would 265/35/18's fit on the stock rims without any other modifications?

Those tires are much wider than stated size. I don't think that would be a good idea.

Do you have any advice on my setup?

im going staggered btw

2"minimum drop on Godspeed Coilovers

18x8.75 +20 Front 225/35
18x9.75 +20 Rear 245/35

Should I have a smaller sidewall on the front or different tire specs?

(I have seen you posting a lot on tires and wheel specs so I thought I would ask)

OK. I performed mad scientist surgery on my rear fender wells... Much was cut away...

So now, with 25mm (1 inch) spacers on the rear and 255/45/18 tires mounted on 18x9.5" rims with a +45mm offset, it looks like this:

Note that the black stripe on the drivers side fender tracing the wheel is not a result of this operation; the previous owner had this stupid tubing stuff on each wheel fender, presumably to try and make them "flared" in some ghetto-*** way. When I had the car repainted, I didn't immediately notice, but they pulled off the front passenger side tubing for some reason but at least they painted over where it was; then later the rear drivers side tubing started falling off. I removed the crappy double-sided tape with Goo-Gone, but now I have a black stripe there. I'm going to pull the rest of the crap off before I have the new rear bumper installed, and have them touch up the fenders. You can still see the tubing on the passenger side pics :/

I have a little bit of rubbing, but I'm pretty sure it's the rear bumper's forward-most points - they are very thin now (from hack-sawing and sanding), but they sort of curl inward just a bit and when I hit significant bumps/dips (mainly with other people in the car) I hear a mild buzz from the tire rubbing on them - mainly just the drivers side though, it was the first one I did and needs a little more revision; the passenger side has almost no rubbing at all. I almost never hear any rubbing when I'm driving alone. I'll fix the drivers side next weekend if my driving this week doesn't wear them down.

Rear size all around with 245/40. I did it for 2 years. Buy some better coilovers.

Actually I was going to put 12mm spacers on, but then I realized I would need longer lug bolts because the stock ones will only accommodate maybe up to 8mm or so tops, which isn't even noticeable IMO. The smallest spacers I could find that had their own lugs attached were 25mm.

I wanted a flush look, but NOT any stretch or poke - and 245/40's have a little bit of poke. I actually prefer the beefier tire look of the 255's, and there probably wouldn't have been any significant difference (in terms of rubbing) between 255/40 and 255/45 - they would be the same width, just a scant few millimeters in height difference, which probably wouldn't make them rub any significant amount less. I love the way this setup looks though; I'll just have to slightly modify the rear drivers side fender well and get the paint on the fenders touched up, and then I'll have a good flush look with full functionality - and no stretch or poke to boot! This was a time-consuming journey of experimentation, but worth it I think.

[EDIT] - I fixed the problem already - I just ordered a set of 20mm spacers to replace the 25mm spacers - I'm betting subtracting 5mm will pull the wheels inward just enough to stop that tiny bit of occasional rubbing, while still staying essentially flush.
