The 040 is a great tire . . . but it is noisy - I can tell already with my 500 mi old tires. But the grip is fantastic and is the ride.

One thing - you guys might try increasing your pressure for a few hundred miles and see how you like it. I am running 40 lbs all around and I am very happy with the ride comfort - its excellent. I will probably drop this pressure to 38 or 37 in the spring and see how I like that.

Second, the 8090 is also a great tire - it is definately quiet (I ran a set of 8000 E's into the ground, very close in tire composition). Anyway its good, but you probably wont see 30 k mi out of them.

If you want replacement summer only rubber, I would recommend you check out:

1) RE 050 - big improvement in noise over the 040, same excellent grip and ride; Run these tires at higher than normal pressures though.
2) Contisportcontact 2 - NOTE the 2!
3) 8090 - great similar to the conti but very spendy
4) Pilot sports are excellent but do tend to be loud.
5) Avon M Tech 500 - excellent value. Very quiet, smooth ride, similar grip but not as quite as good as the above.
6) Toyo T1-R - excellent ride and average noise, but big improvment over the S which has a very soft sidewall.

All of these tires are excellent in the wet and the dry - I look for good wet performance because all of these are going to be top dry performers anyway.

I don't consider cheapo tires like Kumho, Falken, etc anymore - they arent worth the hassle, they dont have the level of grip of the ones I like and they age very poorly, in general.

Just get a set of RA-1s, life will be better.

Some of us might disagree on the cheapo thing.......I can buy Pirelli's at PirelliNA cost and I bought Falken Azenis ....go figure

RA-1?

The S-03 are great, but they are loud - thought we were discussing quiet.

I thought they were more quiet than my RE040. THe GS-D3 is suppose to be a step higher than the S-03 too.

The Azenis are brutal, they are so noisy. I have two sets of those sitting in the basement, cant stand them.
