Tire noise?
 

Hey, do any of you have tire noise from the stock 18". I was just curious if it was common, or if there was anything that i could do to reduce or eliminate it.

Do you think that putting 19"s would help (with new rubber)...or is it a rotor issue?


Its a "thub thub thub" sound...and tire pressure is equal on all tires (34 psi).

If you have the cheep tires you will have tire noise big time. Trust me I know

The stock Bridgestones are prone to get quite noisy as they wear.

Mine sure did. Rotating does not help either.

How many miles do you have on them? My stock Potenzas got extremely noisy at about 20K miles -- it got so bad, I had to replace them (and I'm glad I did).

yeah that seems to be theme of the response i'm getting. my 04 has 73k miles. 'bout time for some new ones i guess...hahah

So no tire noise what so ever now? :)

I've always heard the stock Potenzas were terribly noisy as they aged. I had the stock Dunlops, and never had any noticeable noise. Now I have Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3, and no noise with them either.

When you decide to buy new tires, check the surveys at Tire Rack. One of the things they grade on is road noise.

Get new tires. Check out tirerack.com surveys on tires in OEM size.

The stock Dunlop 8090's are remarkably quiet.

I have the Dunlop 8090's and they are absolutely brilliant tires. I hear that they are much better than the stock Potenza's and they are very quiet. I think they probably grip even better than the Potenza's and I know for a fact that they last probably twice a long.

The only problem is that they cost about as much as Yokohama Advan 07's!

Before you go blaiming the tires make sure your allignment is good.

I had serious interior wear on my stock Bridgestones and then my aftermarket Yokohamas. The culprit was heavy negative chamber on my stock suspension allignment. My Yokohamas dB2s were super-quiet new but got just as loud as the Bridgestones as they aged; so don't think new tires will fix the problem because there's a chance the problem isn't the tires.

If you have heavy negative camber on your RX-8 you will get excessive wear or "cupping" on the inside portion of your tires. The "cupping" is what makes the tire loud and can be seen visually. Simple rotation WILL NOT help this since all tires are wearing on the inside; you have to cross-rotate the tires which means re-mounting and balancing (or get your allignment fixed).

The first thing a new owner of an RX-8 should do is stop in at a tire shop to get their alligment checked or fixed. Getting it checked is free so you lose nothing by checking your allignment; you might be surprised at the results.

I hear the all-season Avon M550's are great if you want less noise and better ride comfort.

19's with the less rubber
 

do you think that if i put 19's and then potentially would have less rubber, this would reduce the tire noise...

I'm debating weather to wait for my wheel upgrade or just get new rubber now...

I have used the stock Dunlops and another set of Dunlop Direzza's for 2 years without any excessive or noticeable road noise. I just got a used set of the stock Bridgestones 040's with at least 50% of the tread gone, and these things are so loud, even your passenger is going to wonder what the hell you are driving on.

First time I put the Bridgestone's on, I had to swap them around to several different positions before I could believe that a tire could possibly sound that loud.

My alignment is terrible (for daily driving) and the Dunlops never made any noticeable road noise despite the agressive setting....

i think that im going to go with dunlop after some research of my own...what do you think of toyo?

no, but my brakes are starting to squeal...

I've never used Toyo street tires... but the RA-1's are amazing fun for the track. Toyo make great tires, but they are expensive.

I've been a big Yokohama tire fan over the years becuase they make several tires to choose from in the high grip category. I'm into the Dunlops now becuase I race superbikes on them and they are in the top 3 tire manufacturers in the world for motorcyle tire development. Dunlop Direzza DZ101 tires are also a major sponsor of drifting, so they should know a thing or two about grip vs tire life....

What causes Tire Noise?
 

What exactly causes tire noise...is the tire out of balance? Does it build up dirt or water in the tire? Uneven wear? ...these are all theorys that i have...

Does anyone know the answer?

noise is caused by wear, more noise is caused by uneven wear... you might get better answers if you included the type and size of the tire on the car..

wheel size has nothing to do with noise, the tire does not know what size wheel it is on.

you might go to www.tirerack.com and read around a bit...
you will learn a lot..

alignment is key.

by stock tyres u mean the bridgestones and yes they are noisy anyway. cant do much about the noise on them as they have a tall side wall and dats wat causes the noise.

wait till u need new tyres and just change to a different brand.
