I'm using the 555s also. I had them on my MX-3 as well.
I think they are a great road tire.

245/35r19 in the rear, 235/35r19 in the front.

For the money spent on Nittos, I think they are good. If you got more money to spend, go for the expensive stuff like SO3s.

Um, try a search here for 'Nitto' - you'll find lots of posts from people who think they're horrible, and that the 555s are nowhere near as capable as other high performance tires. A similar search on other auto enthusiast forums (like the Miata.net forum) will also show that generally, Nittos are considered poser tires and not good performance tires.

I've never tried them... but based on all I've read and from people who's knowledge and experience I'm familiar with and respect - I'd never waste a penny on trying Nittos. There's too many other good tires out there to risk a mistake on them.

Regards,
Gordon

Interesting.

Having owned just about every tire brand in the past 20 years and having gone through 8 different tire setups on the Miata in the last 5 years, I just can't agree with that.

The Nitto is a comfortable, durable and grippy street tire.
Would I run it at the track? No.
Would most people here ever get their car to ten tenths? No.
That is what Falken and Toyo are for.

The fact is, there are few tires that aren't adequate for the typical driver and the vast majority of "performance" tires are well up to the job.
Nitto just happens to be an above average street tire with a good wear rating and really reasonable price tag.
That goes for Hancook, Kumho and the other Korean manufacturers. Ultimately, they are all Bridgestones or Firestones, anyway.

I think you would be better aiming your ire at Pirelli, Yokohama and Michelin - all manufacturers of very expensive tires that have no performance or wear advantage over the typical economy tire.

ok, I'll throw my 2¢ in. I have had the Nitto tires and they are great drag tires. Cheap and sticky. They are not however good auto x or track tires. It seems the side wall isn't as rigid. That being said, the Kumho Ecsta MX is what I would recommend, cheap, sticky, and rigid.

Of course I'm assuming the person asking wants a max performance tire for the stock rims. If you encounter wet weather or snow frequently you may want to reconsider both the Nitto 555's and the Kumho MX.

Do a search on tire rack for tires (not for vehicle), then pick what you like and shop around. Also check out discount tires as tire rack doesn't sell Falken tires which are also great.

BTW: My Kumho MX arrive Friday

and while you're searching check out www.edgeracing.com as neither Discount nor Tire Rack sell Toyo tires and the T1s is a great all around performer.

Like I said, I've never owned Nitto tires, but I've read enough to not ever want to - honestly, you guys are the first I've EVER heard with good things to say about the 555s!

Here's one thread from this very forum about Nitto 555s...

Here's one Miataforum thread where the 555s are discussed - one quote:
Nitto NT-555 - There probably are worse so-called "performance" tires on the market, but I can't think of any offhand. I once had the misfortune of actually paying money for a set of these - to make a long story short, after 6 months and multiple trips back to the tire dealer, I took them off and threw them in a dumpster, glad to be rid of them. Hands down the worst tires I've ever owned. Poor dry traction, poor wet traction, harsh ride, almost as loud as Yokohama A032Rs, and inconsistently molded, so you get the added benefit of steering vibrations. I wouldn't use them on any car I owned even if you paid me.

Another Miataforum thread about Nitto 555s with an interesting quote:
NITTOS? ...not even if they were FREE.

My '97 had Nitto's on it when I bought it. A couple of days later I took an off ramp at the same speed that I normally did in my '93 (with D60A2's) ...damn near got killed. Pucker factor was too great with the Nitto's.
Hmmm...

Gordon

Those threads not withstanding, I have had the exact opposite experience.
I find them to be considerably quieter than the OEM Bridgestones or Dunlops and they have substantially more wet traction than any "performance" tire I've owned.
They wear considerably more slowly as well.
I had Dunlop and then Yokohama on my MX-3 before switching to Nitto. Both were mostly finished before they made 10,000 miles.
My Nittos were still seemingly new after nearly 20,000 miles.

Nittos are not real "performance" tires. But, then again, neither are Bridgestones.
Once again, you must go with Toyo T1-S or Falken Azenis for that.
Of course, they cost twice as much and last half as long as Nittos which is a waste of resources for the average street driver.

I'd agree if they really cost twice as much, but they don't

Good info.
The last time I priced the Toyos and Falkens they were way more expensive than that.
I'll have to get a set of the Falkens for my second set on the Miata.
They are still too soft for long-term street use, however.

BTW: the ST115 Falken has a 360 treadwear, the Toyo T1S has a 280, and the kumho has a 220.

The Nitto has a 300 so not too far off

I didn't include the Falken Azenis Rs because the largest size is a 245/45R17, but just for ***** and giggles they cost $117 @ Edge Racing and have a 200 Tread wear and I consider them the best tire for STX Solo2

Well the money is not the issue. I was just looking to replace the stock wheels as the sidewalls are begining to bulge. I know I'd have to replace them soon anyway. It seems like every tire company is comming out with a new tread design and whatnot and saw the Neo Gen and was curious. The Toyo's are high and my list as well (TS1 and Proxes 4).

lol....sure why not. I guess it will boil down to the sizes availble per manufacturer. I will be gettin new rims and will most likely end up with 255/35/18 shoes. I know the Ts-1's, 555's and Azenis all come in that size...Oh decisions decisions.

Why that size?

Assuming I did my math correctly, the Stock 225/45R18 has a diameter of 25.972" (depending on tire pressure, brand, etc...we'll just say it's close).

The 245/40R18 has a diameter of 25.717 while the 255/35R18 has a diameter of 25.028

Now I'm no expert... but I'd rather have a tire that is only off by 0.2" than 0.9" The smaller tire will change the rolling gear, speed will be off, and as funky as our computers are... may or may not have issues with VDC and ABS

If you are changing rims then perhaps you could consider an 18 X 9 front and rear. You can then squeeze a 275/35R18 on front and rear (yes they fit.. ask Typror <-sp?) if size is what matters. The Diameter would be 25.579" or only 0.4" difference

just my ¢2
