New springs without new shocks?

I'm wanting to get new springs and shocks but the shocks push it a little out of my price range I think. I remember hearing about some problems with only replacing springs with stock shocks but I couldnt find it when I searched. What would the problems be? I was wanting Tein S. Tech and eventually the koni shocks. Would there be a better combination with stock shocks? Would it be better to replace shocks first? Or wait to get both? Thanks in advance

you can always just get the spring first to go with the stock shocks. not ideal, but its not end of the world. as long as you get the wheel alignment done afterwards. provided you dont go too low on just the springs on stock shocks, the stock shocks will still last a while.
replace the shocks after you have enough funds and make sure you re-do the wheel alignment after replacing the shocks.

Keep in mind that if the springs are considerably more stiff like say the Mazdaspeed springs the stock shocks will not dampen enough and the car will bounce more when hitting a bump.

The Racing Beat springs were created to work well with the stock shocks.

Konis or Tokico D-spec adjustable shocks would be great paired with the springs.

Tokicos are softer then Konis:

Would you say that the Koni SA and MS springs would be a good combo for autocross but still livable for daily driving?

Personally I would go with the Racing Beat springs with the Konis.

A 0.8 drop with the MS.

RB is a 0.5 drop all around.

The adjustability of the dampers is nice.

I prefer .5-.8 drop but the springs rates of the RB make me think twice about spending 200+ for nearly stock spring rates, it almost makes no sense.

Plus everything I've read about the MS says they are .8" drop at all 4 corners is this not correct?

Whoops I was thinking of Tein's.

You're right 0.8" or 20mm for the Mazdaspeed.

good springs on bad shocks won't handle worth a sh-t, but good shocks on OE springs will, if you can't afford both then you can't afford springs ...

Don't replace the rear springs unless you replace the stock shocks.

The stock rears are pretty weak.

Thanks for all the replies. I'm considering getting both springs and shocks but that leaves me with little extra money for me to spend for a while probably. But at the same time I cant think of much else I'd want to spend it on. But still something to think through. Also debating between S tech and H tech. I'm thinking H tech will work out better for me.

I thought about that but I figured I'd just save my money till I had more than enough left over when buying the shocks and springs if anything. How long of an install would shocks and springs be? I know for sure I dont have the tools, so I'd be taking it somewhere to be installed, but kinda need my car most the time, at least during the week.

1 - 3 hours per corner depending on how good a person is and if they have the proper tools.
