Brakes + Rocks = Terrible Noise

Today I had a real scare with my car. I drove up to the McDowell Mountain Regional Park in Arizona. I was about 5 miles into the park when I suddenly heard a terrible screeching sound. I immediately pulled over to look under my car. I only drove about 20 feet like this.

It turned out that a rock had wedged itself between the brake rotor and shield. I shook the shield and the rock fell out.

Has anyone else had this happen before?
