thats true^^ when i think stretch on a 9.5" rim i say start with a 225, but it obviously depends on the owner. going with either a 255 or 245 with a +22 offset sounds like some fender and bumper work is in your near future

Ross, I'm going to have to disagree with you here.

First off, tread width numbers are supposed to be designed off of millimeters, though we all know they greatly vary, both wider and skinnier than a manufacturer may claim.

If the widths were exact, this would be the case:
235 = 9.25
245 = 9.64
255 = 10.03
265 = 10.43

Still, although manufacturers do tweak the widths, for whatever reason (competitive tire = a hair wider, el cheapo tire = a hair skinnier, etc), the above width conversions are a good guideline to go by.

245/40 is essentially square without a real stretch on an 18x9.5. If you consider these stretched tires, you have not dealt with stretched tires. Pictures ->



265/35 has an ever so slight bulge, but still 100% square on 18x9.5. This would be a great performance setup, the perfect amount of rubber for this width with maximum performance. Pictures ->



235/40 is within manufacturer recommended widths and will give a slight stretch. Nothing over the top, great for keeping it "safe" with the manufacturer recommendations while allowing for some stretch. Pictures ->

The only reason I feel like I've got a good grip on the subject is I've dealt with each one of these specs firsthand. A lot of it is IMHO since it can be taken from different perspectives but this is how I see it.

My post was more based around what i want personally (track rat and all).

Now this is IMHO so I guess I have should have stated to J03 that the reason I wouldnt go 235 is that I feel with the right amount of work, you can get a fatter tire on there. After all, the fatter the tire, the more grip you get. Now all of this is irrevelvant if your main purpose for the car is just show, not aggressive driving. Ive been playing around for many months (via pictures, measurements, etc) to find the best balance between looks and performance.

It seems you are looking for the same thing! 275's on a 9.5 +22? I can't wait to see if it requires the same amount of camber as the +15 265's. With R-comps it's really not logical to daily drive with such camber, so Id be looking for a combo I could align back to stock after a track day and not have to worry about fender rubbing.

I would love to be able to run 9.5 +22 with 265's at a reasonable camber rate (of course with rolled and pulled fenders) so let me know how the 275's go

 

Slight change of plans, I may be getting some 255/35 R1-R's. We'll see though and of course I'll post up

275 on a 9.5 +22 won't require camber like the 265's did, it should be perfect. Hell, if the car were raised it would naturally take away some of that camber. But anyways, I'll post it up when done

I guess my main concern was that jo3 was being recommended a 245/40 for a stretched tire on a 9.5 - that won't really be the case. But anyways, I think we have shared enough to allow those reading the thread to figure it out on their own :D

 

Yes you are correct. To the regular eye a 245/40 is not much of a stretch for 9.5 and I apologize if I led anyone astray.

Any worries about the 255/35 as it's over 3% smaller than stock? I wish GOOD tires were made in 255/40 lol. Ive searched them all (nto5, re11, xs, z1 ss, ra1, r1r, etc)

 

Smaller OD will give you some gearing, as long as its the same on all 4 corners you wont have any DSC/TSC/ABS issues. In other words, they'll help the car feel a bit more responsive, 255/40 is too too tall imo.

 

What about in terms of lowering; wont you have to lower the car more to close the wheelgap?
