Would a broken key fob cause my 05 MT to not crank?
Would a broken key fob cause my 05 MT to not crank?
So I live in the Midwest where this ice storm is supposed to hit. I got up for work this morning, put my key in the ignition, and kneeled on the drivers seat to grab my ice scraper. Thing is I kneeled onto my lanyard that was attached to my key fob and broke the flipable key out of the plastic housing of the fob. The unlock/lock/trunk buttons still work on the fob and the key section is still intact. But when I turn the key the car does nothing. The radio and dash lights all come on like normal, the car just doesn't turn. No cranking, nothing. I held the broken fob up with the key to see if that made a difference but hasn't. Any ideas?

Is it possible the immobilizer transponder chip fell out of the plastic section of the key? It needs to be close to the key when you turn it to start. I haven't had one of these remotes apart, so not sure where the chip lives exactly.
Yes. The chip needs to be very close to the ring arround the switch you can remove the chip from the fob and stick it to the p/u ring but it may take many tries to find the sweet spot i used a youtube video i found that someone did this to a ford windstar to do mine
