Key Replacement

So I found a few threads about Keys but none answered all of my questions. If you know of one just shoot me the link.

So I own a 2008 with the cc key and the bells and whistles that accompany. This includes the lock/unlock button and the ability to turn the ignition with the key in my pocket. I am currently down to one key and I would like to have at least one other key. However, $400 for a new cc key just isn't in the cards for me at the moment.

Here is what I understand so far.

1. A key that will start the car must have a transponder code. This must be purchased and programmed by the dealer or other authorized store.

2. Remote entry can be achieved the a regular key fob that I can program myself.

What I don't understand.

1. What is the cc key actually doing?
a. I assume it is actively transmitting a signal that the car reads. I assume this allows for button lock/unlock and the ability to turn the ignition with proximity.

2. Are there any other keys that allow for the proximity features that the cc key allows for?

3. Which keyless remotes/keys will work?
a. Will a blade key work or am I stuck with the fob I had with my '04?

Thanks

An automotive locksmith should be able to program a key and fob cheaper than a dealer.

There are two CC fobs that will work (only Fobs with FCCID BGBX1T458SKE11A01 will work). One has the trunk release button and the other does not. Other than that they look identical.

I didn't find any other fobs with the same ID so I don't think there are any other options.

But the fob programmed by the dealer works for more time than programmed by the locksmith and dealers offer warranty for that particular fob.

The programming doesn't have an expiration date.

Absolutely, and programming can be done both at dealership and locksmith store.

Around how much did it cost you to get a key reprogrammed?

That’s not an FCC ID you’re listing. The ID you’re looking for is KPU41788
