Wierd Full Sweep of Gauge Needles?
Wierd Full Sweep of Gauge Needles?
Did a search and found a few threads that somewhat address the issue I'm having but no real definative info, mostly speculative. Maybe someone has since figured this out....
Got home from vacation (my 8 sat about 10 days without driving) and drove it to the gas station, started up and ran fine. After filling up, it wouldn't start, like it had a dead battery. I noticed when I first turned the key to the position where the gauges light up all gauge needles did a quick full sweep (I think it was all gauges, it happened quite fast). Had my wife drive over and give me a jump, thinking my battery was weak from sitting so long (although why did it start initially?). Started up with the jump and ran fine with no problems.
A few weeks later, the same thing happened (no start - full gauge sweep) and every time I turned the key off and back on, it did the full gauge sweep, but this time I waited a few minutes and tried starting it again and it started with no gauge sweep. It's been running fine ever since.
I would normally suspect a weak battery but, from past experience, I know once my battery gets "low" enough to not start my car, waiting a minute or two won't magically charge it back up. Am I incorrect? Anyone else experience this?

the stock batteries are crap. take it to a dealer or a auto parts store and have them check the cranking amps... if it's below about 250 have it replaced under warranty. There's a TSB for it. Don't let the dealer charge you a pro rated amount.
Doesn't sound like a battery issue to me, but I'm no expert. Full sweep of the needle was a sign that you had cleared one of the two forms of memory retained within the pcm. You can recreate it by turning the key to the on position and quickly tapping your brake pedal 20+ times within 8 seconds. But, maybe it's due to a low battery . Hmmm. Wish I had an answer for you.

Thanks, hoping that's all it is. Getting the battery checked will probably be the easiest thing to do and a good place to start.
