What starter should I use, not turning fast enough!

We narrowed the problem down to the starter not spinning the motor up fast enough. Can we use the starter from a 2007 which has the upgraded starter???
or which should we use?
we have a 2004 RX8

well - if you said what model you owned it might help . If you own a 2006 mt or later then they came with the fast starter .

The older starter will not cause a problem by itself (unless it fails)
But to answer the question, assuming MT, the new starter is N3Z1 and the old one is N3H1.
The two are the compatible so they can be exchanged.

If your car is flooded like mine was then it probably still won't start even with a new starter.
- I had to remove the plugs and perform a full de-flood to start it.

it's a 2004 auto trans.. it's had this strange hard start issue since I got it. I have to slightly feather the gas pedal to get it to start.

Cough - this is why we needed model .....

No upgrade available for auto trans - just get your existing starter rebuilt ....

A healthy engine starts even with a failing starter without problems.
Did you do a compression test?

Agreed. This was pointed out to the OP
My starter was turning at 164RPM and reliably started the car for 8 years until it flooded.
Once it flooded even the upgraded starter cranking at 320 RPM wouldn't start the car until it was properly de-flooded.
