noises

So i just bought a 2007 RX-8 it now has 53k miles on it and ive only had it for a few days. i have done some searching on rx8club and i still have some questions.

1. sometimes when at a complete stop when i put it in first is makes a "slam" noise. while i have the clutch depressed all the way. It doesn't ALWAYS do this though.

2. some times starting acceleration it makes a metal "crinkle" noise like something is not quite together. Can't tell if it is from tranny or drive shaft or even the diff. sometimes it makes the same noises when downshifting or not even in gear (tapping the accelerator) which kinda makes me think its the drive shaft.

3.sometimes at above 6k rpm there is a slight vibration noise coming from the tranny.

i plan to change the tranny and diff fluid to redline like everyone suggest and hopefully it helps. Has anyone else experienced these types of symptoms are they normal? is it just the fluids or maybe needing a new clutch?

thank you

Unhappy Rattle in 6th gear from 40-50mph

I just bought the car and the owner was upfront about the problem... The car makes a rattleing (metal on metal sound) in 6th Gear, I Believe it may be just a loose heat shield but could this be a problem with the tranny in any way?

All Replies are greatly appreciated

#1 sounds to me like a bad synchro in first gear
#2 Check the u joints! most likely driveshaft issue
#3 (Cant Tell you for sure)

Brain, Hi.
I think that it would be a good ideas to check the tranny, especially since you are only having the problem in 6th gear. Plus, A loose heat shield would make a 'Tinny' sound. you will have to discern the type of metal sound your getting.
Sorry I don't have more for you.
Good luck.

I have '07 with about 80k KM on it (just under 50k miles). I have what sounds like the same problem as Bradttu15 in post 827...while stopped and clutch to the floor, there's often a "clunk" that I can feel when slipping it into 1st. It only happens once - while still stopped, I can smoothly shift into any gear and back to 1st smoothly. I'll live with it but good to know that it isn't "normal" and others have it. Almost certainly a syncro issue.

Anyway, I recently changed out the tranny and diff fluid with semi-synthetic. The tranny oil was surprisingly clean but the diff oil was a different story...thick and nasty! I'm going to replace the diff oil again in a couple months just to clean it out as best as possible.

The fluid change didn't really make any noticeable difference, but I did seem to improve fuel economy a bit.

I have a 2004 6MT. My 4th gear grinds constantly every time I'm shifting from high RPM's. The other day my 5th gear did the same but I'd say 8/10 times I'm shifting to 4th from a high RPM it grinds. If I let the RPM's settle for a second before shifting it is fine. Any input on this issue?

I am on my 2nd tranny. I have had a similar problem going from 1st to 2nd at high RPMs with the first one. when checked I found that the syncros were damamged and that it was more cost effective to by a new tranny then to get the parts from mazda and rebuild. I am thinking it might have to do with the light weight flywheel I installed, or that the tranny just won't take to many high RPM sifts for very long.
Do you have a flywheel mod?

First, Id like to apologize for not starting my own thread (I have created two accounts now and none of them will let me post a thread). This is as close to the topic as I could find.

I have a 2005 Rx-8 Gran Touring model. The differential is giving me issues. I can turn the drive shaft a half a turn from 'touch to touch', and as you can imagine, this amount of slop in the diff is extremely annoying. All I want to know is, is this a ring gear shim problem? Im looking to replace the whole diff, but I want an R3 diff and they can be expensive. If i can have it rebuilt it may be more cost effective.
Does anyone have this problem with theirs? While driving from a stop, I have to slowly disengage the clutch until the diff preloads, so that it wont make a loud banging noise because of the slack in the diff.
Also, any reccomendations of where to have a stock torsen diff rebuilt?

You will be way better off getting a low mile used one and swapping it in. The parts are expensive...and the labor would make it way more expensive than a good used one

Thats sort of what im starting to figure out, but labor isnt an issue since I do all of the work myself. It is nice to be able to work in a garage through work to get it done.

Id really like to have the advantages of the 4.7 ring gear. I think 5.1 would be too extreme being a daily driven car. These ring gear kits are EXPENSIVE! WTH???

I would like to check if any of you guys are having this whining sound coming from the transmission side..

it's a 9 year old car and im starting this notice this faint whining sound when i increase the rpm... the sound is more evident when i disengage the clutch and let the car roll (say abt 40-50kph)...

cant get the video cuz the road noise blocks out the whining sound that im hearing... sound like those lorries...

could it be driveshaft?

try setting the rear end up on some horses and chock your front end, run it in gear. you can move around the outside to isolate the sound better.

Blacknightz, I know exactly what whine you are talking about. One of our RX8's was doing the same thing. Turned out to be the release bearing. Car only has 54k miles and it had started at around 35k.

I had an issue with my personal RX8 that had a major squeak to the release bearing, and then slowly my synchros were all going bad, and my gears were always difficult to get into. This was all after my engine replacement by a local memphis shop. I had purchase a fully loaded 04 6 speed RX8 with only 37K miles for $1,500. It has a front right damage from a minor wreck. This became my spare car to just punish and experiment problems with.

Long story short, the shop that did my swap had never mounted the transmission properly. In fact it was sagging drastically. I had unbolted the four transmission support bolts and then used a jack to raise the tranny back up. I then tightened the bolts and my tranny was back to normal. Everything is an easy shift now and no more release bearing squeak. But, the damage has been done to my synchros and I will be doing my transmission swap, properly.

Thanks titaneum grey for the budget input...

billjoebob, that was one of the probable causes... but turns out that wasnt mine...

i recently had the 4.77 FD and OS Giken (all brand new) installed. 1 and half week thereafter, this weird lorry-sounding noise came from the transmission.

Went back to the workshop, they said they tightened the driveshaft and the noise was gone. However, the sound was back a week later...

Attach is the pic that 'May be' the reason that caused it...

*ure not suppose to have this gap on your drive shaft...

* here is a pic after pushing back the drive shaft to it's proper place...

I went to get a 2nd opinion from another reliable workshop... drained the differential fluid, all the "glitters" of metal chips can be seen in the oil..

They said that the installer must have over tighten the shim (or shins?) or spacers in the LSD when u are suppose to have some free play... When u accelerate, the LSD is suppose to grip and friction... and when u decelerate, there is suppose to be no friction... but in my case, it is too tight and when i decelerate, there is still friction and THUS the lorry-sounding noise.

i highlighted to them if it could be the driveshaft, they said that if it is the driveshaft, the car would rattle...

So went back to the original installer, they still insisted that the driveshaft caused this...

However, i think that they may have overtighten when installing the LSD and the final drive and caused the driveshaft to malfunction and create the gap and thus the SOUND!

- any clarifications and input is greatly welcomed and appreciated

I say you just accept your loss and buy a new one. Then install it yourself. No use using the same shop who ruined it, to do the job again.

I have a 05' RX 8 with 21 k on it.

I started to hear a bearing noise when warming it up. This noise is intermittent. (delear says its normal throw out bearing noise)

Once everything gets Hot, Ex after driving over 50 miles at highway speeds. I get a grinding noise when pulling out . Pulling out while banking even greater. It dosen't present itself until everything is hot. The noise gets increasingly louder when I have passengers in the back. It sounds like a bearing grinding away. It makes it when pulling out in first real bad and sometimes after the shift in second. If I have passengers in the back and the car is hot it makes this sound when on uneven pavement as well (EX. two wheels on road two up on median).

The dealer tells me nothing is wrong with the car,and if anything the throw out bearing is on its way out.

The car has been well maintained. All fluids changed Bi-Yearly. Motor oil changed on dealer schedule. Ford/Mazda dealer. I change the motor oil once in between dealer free change.

Where do I start. The dealer is no help.

Should be fine until it goes out. The one we have, still has the release bearing grind at 60k miles. I will take a video of it and try to post it. It's just annoying, really.

04 RX8 AT Limp mode

Hi there. Just got my Rx8. Bought the car with transmission light on, stuck in 3d gear, just swapped the tranny, drove the car about 20 mins home from the shop, everything worked perfectly fine. Started it in the evening, same thing as before. No shifting, limp mode. Codes i get from it are p0713 p0753 p0758 p0763 p0768, i also get immobilizer code U0167. So I'm if there are common issues causing this? It's 2004 rx8, 4 spd AT. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. couldn't start my own thread, but i really need help asap, i want to enjoy my baby already.

How did you end up with a car with so many problems? Try checking all of your fuses. Get the codes fixed one by one I guess. Good luck.

Alright guys, today i finally got a chance to put hands on my rx8. Figured out the problem, connector on some kind of switch or sensor on the tranny was kind of loose, fixed that, now it drives great. Maybe someone will find it useful.
Best of luck to everyone.
