Smoke Under the hood

hello guys
i have 04, 110000km rx8
recently i was having some issues with low idle and vibration
I knew it was time to change my coils/plugs/wires
so I changed all my coils/plugs/wires and even did oil change this morning.

When I jack up the car to drain my oil, i noticed little wet spot underneath my car.
I smelled it and it was my coolant. Leakage wasnt severe, it was almost dry. I guess its a small leak.
So i added some coolant, finished doing all the work
and went out to test drive.
I felt like my engine was back to normal and running great
I did some hard driving for 3~5mins and came back home.
When I was entering my garage, I noticed smoking coming out under my hood. Smoke comes around my coolant tank. smells like coolant.

My coolant temp gauge, and engine oil temp gauge is normal
I let my car be a bit (smoke stopped) and went to gas.
As I came back home, there is smoke again around and beneath the coolant tank.
But I checked my coolant level before and after, coolant level stayed the same
CEL came on as I was driving to gas station

Since I dont live in US, there is nowere I can get my CEL checked for free.
Last time, Mazda charged me 60 dollars which is rip off.
I cant afford to pay 60 dollars right now,
I dont know what my problem can be,
Please help,

Likely need more oil...3 litres isn't enough for an oil change is it?

There are some things to check for the coolant thing. At 100K+ and 7 years I would be looking at rad and heater hoses. Mine were very shot from all the track driving I do at 4 yrs...Also the rads can develop leaks in the plastic tanks as well.

If the coolant seals were leaking you would normally see white sweet smelling smoke and the car would be hard to start..or you would have coolant in the oil

Hello, Dan
yeah, I ran out of engine oil, so when I was gasing, i bought another 2 litres of oil and added a litre in.
my engine oil light is gone now.

My car starts like right away. have no hard time starting.
I knew my coolant is leaking slowly, I'll def check my coolant tank/hoses for the leaks.
can coolant leak develop CEL?

What about your engine oil level, whats it at? The light is only to tell you of a big problem with the oil not to tell you when or how much to fill it. Just to make sure it is actually full and not still low.

You may consider buying your own scan tool, you can get one for cheaper than Mazda wants to charge you to read it once. Getting the cel read would be a huge help.

I am having a similar issue as the OP, and I also have an 04, although with under 50k miles. It happened the other day, and hasn't happened since. The smoke was indeed sweet smelling.

You say the coolant seals could be leaking, can you point me in the right direction, where are those exactly?

Inside the engine between the aluminum rotor housings and the cast "irons"

If you have a coolant seal leak you need a rebuild or a new engine...no way around it
