severe knocking
Hey guys, names mark and i own a tuning/restoration company in south wales/ UK.
Recently purchased a 2003 plate 8, 50k on the clock and good service history, i bought the car as spares or repairs due to a 'minor' engine fault supposedly cutting out randomly
To cut a long story short, upon getting the car to the workshop and finally firing it up (very flooded as the delivery driver got it off the trailer and turned it straight off), the noise coming from the engine is horrendous, very severe metal on metal sound. now ive been doing my research and ive elimated all the ''common'' problem's, but the knocking is still there, as i know very little about rotary's, fault finding is proving very hard without having some knowledge of the engine.
The only thing i havent done is check the cat or remove the sump as ive heard if the sump is dented (which mine is) a part of the engine can ''touch'' the sump (How true that is i have no idea)
This is a video i have found with the same noise,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4K6x0...der&playnext=1
Please excuse my limited knowledge, ive currently got a bottle of corona and a book on Wankels for some bed time reading
any sort of help will be really appreciated...ive searched the forum for a simialr problem, but im unable to find anything similar, they all seem to either come back to the cat or SSV

There is nothing in the sump that can touch...but if the pan is dented badly the oil pump pickup may have broken off...that would cause severe lubrication failure and the engine will be toast
It seems to run...so check that the clutch/pilot bearing is OK...and that there are no belts/pullies rubbing on anything
A compression test will tell you the state of the apex and side seals

dont think its anything gearbox related as the noise is there when the clutch is in or out and moving/stationary.
Will have a look at the pulleys
im awating the return of my compression tester, got sent away for repair 2 months ago
