Guys ,
this is good stuff. I have a view I would like to share. In one way our engine is like a 2 cycle engine---it injects oil into the combustion chamber. A 2 stroke engine will not run well if the pre mix it needs to run on uses dino oil. Thats why there are excellant synthetic pre mix oils available for all those high performance 2 cycle engines out there. For this reason and after doing some research, I have done 2 things. I now run a premix usuing a racing motorcyle synthetic oil and I have switched to royal purple engine oil. Now I am not saying everyone needs to do this. Everyone must do what they are comfortable in doing. But I can tell you this. My engine is smoother than what it was, including idle.
When I put RP in my transmission I could feel and hear what a differance it made. Now logic tells me that it would have to help the engine the same way. Among other things it has to reduce the likelyhood of carbon buildup. Now dont get into the engine seal issues etc. I dont buy that. ANd like I say everyone to your own. This is just my thoughts im sharing.

And excellent thoughts they are. The point I would like to add to that is one I've made for years and believe I was the first person on this forum to state it: They should have made this thing with a separate tank for oil metering with a level sensor. That way they could have run better lubes for the individual needs and never sacrifice engine oil levels risking bearing life.

I concur. A separate tank would have been a better design. i Guess they thought the buyer would not want to bother with that. Interesting note is the mazda racing teams use a straight pre mix. They do not even have a pump at all. Of course that is a differant world.

I bet there would be a way to rig up a tank just for the MOP.

Great links shared -- thanks for the lesson,

i have lots of pinging...marbles.
i have been using rp 5-30 for a while. i am confused since i am using LESS oil since the pinging started yet have no performance issues...seems to run great.
i have to wonder if the catalytic converter or O2 sensor is affecting combustion somehow due to a conflicting feed back from the exhaust?

also, there is a lot of conjecture in this thread (including from me) but wonder if anyone has had any conclusive resolution to the pinging issue?

Sad Day...

Well...heard back from Mazda Corporation yesterday and they are going to purchase back my vehicle under the North Carolina Lemon Law Act. I reached my limit after my car (off and on) was in the shop for 45+ days. Good luck to everyone that is still dealing with issues.

Well, I know that decarboning the engine is NOT the long term answer. It has been about two weeks since Mazda decarboned the engine in my 8 and as of today it is knocking under load again. Anyway, back to the shop it will go. maybe I'll get lucky and get a new engine and a second oil cooler.

I HAVE run engine cleaner in my engine for 2 tankfuls and it still knocks.
my dealer does not seem to have any clue that this is happening to other cars.

Rudy, your car pings on 93 octane or on 87? mine knocks at full throtle / high RPM, in second gear, if I use 87 octane. On 89 is fine under all conditions.
New engine can fix what? In time, it will become as dirty... unless there is a flash to prevent something that helps the carbon deposits - but the flashes so far help deposits by running rich... maybe changed ignition map will help...

LOL. That would save my wife time going to and from work. However, I doubt that would go over well with the cops

Well, a new engine will fix any previous knock damage that may have occurred over the last year or so. After that they can replace/flash the ECU or fix whatever else they think is causing the problem.

Am I missing something, or does it seem that there aren't many new cases of 8s needing engine replacements?

Most of the existing cases surfaced at the beginning to middle of the summer, leading to speculation that the problem was heat related. Yet the last time I looked, it's still awfully hot in those areas of the country where the problems first arose.

I'm just surprised that we haven't heard of many new problem cars recently.

We had extreme heat during the problems, 120 degees in some parts of Vegas. I have not heard of a single problem since.

I also think some of the "engine replacements" were never done or not needed.

heat

The majority of the engine failures occured when the outside temp was between 112-118 here in Vegas. We had a run of about 2-3 weeks where it was DAMN hot EVERY day.

Once the temp went below 110 (and closer to 102-103) the failures stopped.

My guess is that next summer we will have a fresh batch blown / melted engines.

The car is great but the engine seems to have very little tolerance for high temps.

Time will tell.

no, my car has always used 93 and did not start pinging until 2 months ago. i have used two tanks with red line engine cleaner and am not sure it has helped yet...
i have a flywheel, pulleys, different intake. i wonder if my car is confused with these mods and the timing or a/f mixture is thrown off. i have no cels though.

i drive my car aggressively alot...after all, thats the joy of this car. it should not have marblitis!!!!!

Some of the power losses due to the heat after driving in slow traffic or sitting (heat soaking) etc will be caused by the temp of the air going in to the engine. As the Air temp goes up the computer will retard ignition and usually add a little fuel. This will cause a power loss, but will prevent detonation. The computer will do the same thing when the water temp exceeds a cretin point. If the water temp is hot and the air temp is hot it will retard even more as it looks at each sensor separately and makes the adjustments in ignition and fuel for each sensor on and individual basis. Some of the issues could actually be from the programming of the computers in the higher air temp and water temp ranges not being what they should be (Mazda's fault). Some of the problems could also be from people driving the cars and feeling the power loss that is supposed to occur (Mazda saving your engine) as the computer does what it is supposed to do. Your normal person that doesn't understand or have the technical understanding of how an engine management system works will worry that something is wrong with their $30,000 car and run it strait in to Mazda to have it checked out.

I have an appointment to drop off my 8 at the shop on monday. They are giong to take out the ECU and ship it somewhere to be inspected and hopefully fixed. Although,I'm worried that after they fix the ECU that my 8 will have less power in the mid to upper RPM's.

my dealer cannot duplicate the engine overheating that I experience everyday on 95+ degree days here in hott sunny dry Lubbock.

But my friend (a salesman) did see it happen with his own eyes when I took him to the bank one day. He is my only proof, but I am still not believed.

Be careful abou this....they did the same to mine but my big complaint was what permanent damage was done to the engine during the overheating phase....I would push the hell out of them to buy it back!!!!

Hate to drag out an older thread, but it needs to be done...

Has there been any update or information divulged from the 'team of techs' that were coming to do research in Vegas and Pheonix?

My car is now starting to have some problems (3000 mi on the ODO) and I am really curious what Mazda came up with to explain all of these problems that have been going on (esp related to engine repl)

You may want to check out an earlier thread under the title of BLOWN MOTOR. Some information you can leverage in diagnosis and possibly in discussions with dealer / Mazda North American Ops.

Ford instaledl a new engine in our van due to a head gasket design flaw even though the van was over the 3 year/50K mileage limit on the warrantee. It turned out that there were so many failures of that engine that they faced either a class action lawsuit and/or a massive PR fiasco so they extended the warrantee to cover that problem. Same situation with our present van, a Honda Odyssey. Honda is extending the warrantee on the transmissions to 100K miles because of a higher than expected failure rate.

So those of you RX-8 owners approaching the 50K miles limit, don't assume you'll be screwed if your engine fails. Mazda will handle this honorably.

how about the ones that are around the 180K mark? because I was just told that I have a "blown" engine and need a new one. I wasnt there to here/see the results...dad took it to the dealer while I was at work, therefore I have no idea how true that was, but dad said that the tech was a mazda trained rotary tech, so im assuming he knows what he was talking about.
