hopfully teh under side of the car is fine..looked okay last itme i had it on a lift (perhaps abotu 2-3 weeks ago....didn't see any signs of burning or heat damage.....so i guess mazda is erring on teh side of caution...kudos to them :D

EDIT: After scanning this somewhat complex instruction, it's apparent that it deals primarily with '05 vehicles built between 22 Mar and 7 Jul 05. Although you can get an idea of where this is going, "repair procedures" for vehicles built prior to 22 Mar 05--referred to as Group 1 vehicles--will be covered under a separate, future recall/bulletin.

I hope the Group 1 cars have a different procedure, having to drop the fuel tank on all those cars will make those Mazda techs very happy to see us. Especially me with my AutoExe member brace

Think they'll be able to work the recall issue with mine while it's in this time, or will I have to bring it back in in another month?

I've read the Group 2 repair instructions (thanks for that!) and am actually more confused than before... 
For the group 2 cars mentioned (Mar 22 - July 7), do those have heat shields on the fuel tank already? The instructions make it sound like the ECU will solve the heat problem provided you don't have heat damage already. But shouldn't they put a heat shield on regardless, or did they do that for group 2 at the factory already?

Hey all! I'm new to the forum and the RX-8.
We actually just purchased ours last night. It was a leftover 04 and the dealer told us these parts would be in either today or early next week. Just an FYI for anyone waiting.
That was a hard pill to swallow, buying such an amazing car and having to leave it at the dealer...ugh!

zoom zoom h and gomez- those are the 2005 pcm flash part numbers. the flash for the 2004 cars is the R- same level for all just different numbering for the seperate years.
this pdf explains the whole group 1( before the fire at the plant) and group 2( produced after the plant had reopened)

The dealer cannot deliver the car to you until the recall inspections have been completed and any possible repairs have been made. He is trying to make you feel better about your purchase, and likely will be "updating" you on a regular basis for several weeks to come. Hang in there.

parts are arriving to get the instock cars moving off the lots again. the parts for cars already out with consumers are sitting on the dock of the bay in japan.since his car on the lot probably has no damage then all he will need is the extra thermal blanket to protect it in the future. so it could be this week coming when the dealer gets them.

Part of the reason they 'cooled down' the car by running it pig-rich at the beginning (when it first got released), and even now (I think I"m m-flash, but my nose tells me LOTS of gas is being poured into the engine when cold..) was to prevent cat thermal damage..right?
Was that ever confirmed, or was mazda worried about things *around* the cats being harmed, and not the cats themselves? I mean, this is like the 10th rotary car they've made, and the 3rd or 4th with cat-cons.. I think by now they know how to make the exhaust hose hold up to the temps.. yeah, I know, the US rules changed or whatnot to ask for 100K life on the cats.. but wasn't that designed-in from Day One? Even my Miata had a 100,000 mile powertrain warantee.. all of it.. and so does the 8, right? The FD did as well, IIRC.. So was it the cats they were worried about, or did they feel something else was amiss, thusly prompting them to 'cool' the cars down a touch via software until a fix could be devised?
If they were running rich to prevent heat damage to items around the cats, and this shield reduces/stops the damage, then wouldn't it follow that the newer flashes (R and E?) will lean out the car some? Get us the missing power and gas mileage?
Just an idle thought on a friday.. thinking of driving while I'm stuck here... where's my tinfoil hat?! :D

its actually not related to that misinmahseven. its under car heat build up related to idling the car fast while sitting still. there is a specific set of circumstances that can cause this issue. and some cars had been found to have fuel tank warpage as a result. i can go into more detail next week.

For my own sake I hope so as well. This dealership is pretty well known for having a large amount of integrity. They do alot of leases for area companies, my wife's included. While I would be understanding of the wait my wife is somewhat less patient. We've both wanted this car for a LONG time but been stuck in a lease. We're buying this time, made too much sense especially with the deal we got.

I've been keeping up with this thread and related ones, and the problems noted some I've experienced also, some not... But given the complexity of the situation, and as it sounds like even Mazda doesn't know exactly what, if any, a "sure" fix is, it looks like an add-on heat shield and a new flash are only temporary fixes for now, and the only way to diagnose fully is to see what happens after these are installed. Does this sound like a good assessment??

Based on the two PDFs it sounds like Group 1 cars must have the fuel tank and/or heat shield replaced regardless of their condition, while Group 2 only if they are damaged. In both cases a PCM reflash is needed, and that reflash was significant enough to require CARB exemption.
1. I wonder if the new flash will "mess up" Greddy's turbo map?
2. If the problem is heat build-up after the cat, I wonder if wrapping the exhaust from cat to muffler would help? Those with stainless cat-back systems shouldn't have to worry about trapped moisture causing rust.

WHEW!!! I'm lucky I guess. Reading the notices, they could have held my car!!! I had my Shinka in for an oil change and tried to get the "R" flash today. Told the service manager I have a hesitation around 6k RPM. He told me I have the "M" flash, I knew this as my car was made a few days before the fire.....but anyway, I didn't get the "R" flash because he said it would not fix my hesitation, and here's where this pertains to this thread. A new flash will be out in a month and a half, I'll receive a notice in the mail because I'm supposed to be getting a new gas tank and the flash at the same time. HHMMM, possibly a gas tank w/ some type of insulation to it because of this problem? As soon as it stops raining, I'm going to look under my car, like in the bulletins Zoom posted.

They were order to hold (not sell or lease) all new 04s and 05s on the lot. Then in the recall notice, they were told to inspect the group 2 cars and were to release them for sale if no damage after the flash. Any group 1 cars need parts so they have to continue to hold these cars.
They are not going to "hold" you car if you drop in for an oil change or something.
