I don't want to speak for how things are in your area...but that is very much how things work up here in Cleveland. Get the car somewhere...anywhere...that people can look at it and have tools. Start makin phone calls and depending on the day within 24 hours someone will probably be over to assist. Heck...when I got my AP exhaust the guys even came up and put it on for 4 pizzas and a case of beer. I've learned a ton from the locals just being around while they work. I guess I am somewhat lucky though as we do have a very large and active RX8 group.

Thanks for the info on those two items. She just called and said its all ready to go and they drove it 25 miles to break in the memory for me (cool). gave me the price breakdown:

$879 total (better than $920)
*I've saved $640 in the past 6 months by not getting the extended warranty (thanks to this site!), so I only look at it like I'm out $230

$110 diagnostic
$98.50 labor on plugs/coils/wires
$150 for plugs, $82.50 for wires, $202 for coils
decarb engine / throttle body / keep alive memory: $147 ($0 for chemicals)
disposal fee: $37
Ouch.....well.........I would've done it for free on the labor and shown you how to do it all, but it's a moot point now. Remember that next time you need some minor.

You now know that you can get the parts much cheaper and there are more than a few of us willing to take an afternoon and show you what's up and help if you don't know how! There are quite a few guys in Orlando as well.
That why I always stress putting some at least vague location in the profile. It does help!

Problem is........just about everyplace is gonna charge you $95.00 to $120.00 an hour labor. That's just the way it is.
Parts can certainly be had cheaper trhan the Stealership......that's for sure!

I don't go to a dealer, even mine unless absolutely required, but............
In terms of dealers, the one in Melbourne(Boniface) is actually really good and does do good work on rotories. Actually they have the #1 Mazda tech in the world right now.......and.....he knows rotories!
From an older arrticle, however I believe he won again last year.

Boniface Hiers Mazda Technician Wins Big In Japan
"Can Mark Wilhelm Really Be The #1 Mazda Tech In The World?"

What do you get when you cross the Pacific Ocean with a 30 Year Mazda Master Technician... well, you get the #1 Mazda Technician in the World! Mark Wilhelm has been employed with Boniface Hiers for 30 years, beginning his career in Merritt Island and spending the next 19 years at our Mazda - Kia dealership in Melbourne. Up until just recently, Mark has had 4 National Titles (#1 Mazda Tech in the United States) under his belt, competing and placing 1st in 1992, 2003, 2005 & 2007..but 2008 will go down in history as Mark's year! Several weeks ago, he was flown to Japan to compete against techs from several other countries in the MazTech Master Technician Competition, and Mark did not dissapoint anyone..defeating the Master Techs from all other countries and bringing home the Gold Medal to the United States! Mark resides in Cocoa, Florida with his wife Ellen, and sons Brian & Troy. Boniface Hiers Automotive Group employees at all locations congratulate Mark on such a fine achievement, and there isn't an owner of a Mazda anywhere in the world that wouldn't want this brilliant technician to work on their automobile. "Way to go Mark!"

Problem is......he's not going to do your oil change, but I'd like to think he'd be smacking the other guys upside the head if they attempt to overfill, or do other stupid ****.

^....Like I said.............had I known he was in Orlando and IF he bought the parts online and been able to wait for the weekend, I would've driven over and shown him just how easy this really is and saved him a ton of cash. I don't believe he put his location in profile until pretty late in the game. I just saw it this evening!

Next time he'll now better and actually there is no better way to get in tune with your car, it's overall condition, and it's needs.......... than wrenching on it yourself.

Mazsurfer: you are correct. I did not put in my location until my last post (after I realized the importance of local communication with fellow RX-ers). Thanks so much for all your help and offering in the future. I'd be glad to learn, and dinner will be on me I'm obsessed with Home Theater and patent law (I write patents), so perhaps I can reciprocate - if you have needs in those areas

Just got the car back. It runs great. Smoother/quicker than before, it seems. However, the one thing that is weird: on start-up from being at a complete stop: the car is requiring a much heavier rev for the clutch to be engaged and car to take off (kinda like how you accidentally have the hand brake on) - its not a big thing but its noticeable. I just have to rev it more to get the car engaged in 1st gear. Normal under these circumstances (recarbed engine/cleared memroy)?

Probably re-learning fuel trims.
I see they apparently reset the KAM, so let's see after a day or two. Wouldn't worry about it right now.

wow, ok the hell continues!!!

-the car drove fine for 3-4 days
-i went on a week-long vacation, left car in driveway
-just came back today
-car wouldn't respond to remote unlock
-i had to manually unlock car
-car has ZERO response when I turn key in ignition: no lights on any panels, no engine sounds at all, nothing!!

-help!! do you guys know what's causing this?? is it related to the plugs/coils/wires/decarbing engine mazda did 2 weeks ago??? is it because i left the car alone for a week in the driveway?

-should I: (a) call Mazda and tell them they fixed my plugs/coils/wires/decarbed engine and need to fix this too as its a related problem, or
(b) don't call Mazda and just have someone on Rx8club.com come over and take a look???

Thaks in advance!!!

i just read here about a similar problem caused by a guy who blew his MAIN FUSE while trying to jump his battery. I haven't tried to jump the battery, so my main fuse shouldn't be blown, should it?

Did you check your battery? Maybe it's dead.

Battery sounds dead or main fuse blown....or both. Check your main fuse...if it is blown you probably tried to jump it backwards.

AAA just came to my house

-battery completely drained
-not rechargeable
-new battery installed
-after AAA installed: "DSC off" light flashing and DSC indicator light (car with skid marks) solidly on
-I took car for drive: (1) "DSC off" light stopped flashing, but DSC indicator light still on, and (2) when i engage clutch from stand-still, I can hear a squeaky noise. are those 2 things normal? Book says take car to dealer, just wondering if that is normal and both of those things will go away??

I'm new here but just had the same problem due to corrosion on the battery terminals (i know you had a bad battery, but same effect). Anyway DSC indicator light stayed on, so I turned car off and on, and it went away. I'm pretty sure it has to do with cutting the electrical power off, and if its like mine will go away on the next start.

Anytime the battery is dis-connected, you have to preform a reset for the DCS/TCS.

Turn the car to on, but do not start.
Turn the wheel all the way to the right, and then all the way to the left.
Turn car off
Wait a few seconds and then start as normal.
This is in the owners manual and saying you don't have one is no excuse! http://www.mazdausa.com/MusaWeb/disp...earHome.action

To the original OP.......make sure your trunk light isn't on! The trunk latch is somewhat famous for this and will drain the battery over time. Look through the trunk passthrough and make sure it's off.
