English fella needs help! Low power
I'd really appreciate some help on this as I am at my wits end with my rex!
Firstly the car-
2006 6 speed mt, 34k miles but had a brand new engine fitted at a main dealer 1200 miles ago.
New K+N, engine mounts, coils, plugs and magnecor plug leads fitted with new engine.
Exhaust system has been removed a few days ago to check the cat and any loose baffles in the back box......all A1 condition.
No CEL.
Secondly the problem-
really hard to start about 6-7 seconds cranking.
Low power in the low to mid range and then full power from 7k to 9k
I have removed the MAF and it was covered in a dirty film of oil, this I cleaned by spraying a solvent based electrical contact cleaner about 4 times on it and left it to really soak, it now looks really clean.
With the MAF disconnected I started the engine, it started first time! I thought this was the problem hence cleaning the MAF but that has not made a difference.
It has been into Mazda twice now and they have not found the problem ( they thought the exhaust was the culprit hence the check at an exhaust fitting centre) I am fed up of paying Mazda to get no answer to the problem.
Anyone got any suggestions? Do you think the MAF has failed as the car starts instantly without it?

Where abouts in the england are you? I got fed up with the mazda dealers to. Kept charging me money to not even solve or find the problem! Absolute rip off. There is a guy in coventry who i just went to see today infact. He is a specialist and actually knows what he is talking about rather than the shitty mechanics at the dealer. Mazda often give him the engines to rebuild because they cant do it themselves!

Low power : could possibly be the APVs stuck open - especially seeing as you get full power later in rev range . Can you hear the apvs cycling after you turn the ignition off ?
Starting : odd that unplugging the maf has that effect . Can you borrow another maf from someone just to see if it makes any difference ?

@Jnjt69, I know what you mean about useless mazda dealers, so far i have spent £200 with them to diagnose the problem and no result. I am off to Wolverhampton mazda tomorrow who I am told by a local mx5 specialist garage that they are very good with all mazda's, we shall see! I take it you have gone to Mick Hurley at Cov, he has an excellent reputation. If wolves don't solve my problem I may give him a go or WGT at Northwich. I do know I am getting cheesed off with my rex as I have spent £3k in the last 5 months on it!
@Brettus, thanks for the reply, the cycling of the apv's.......what does that sound like? Could the eccentric shaft position sensor be at fault?

@Brettus, many thanks for the video, the rx checked out fine. Took the rex to another mazda dealer and they found the problem within 10 mins, a faulty plug but this was due to the dealer that fitted my new engine did not fit the brand new plugs I supplied, but a set that are now obselete and are thought to be 6 yrs old............some techy at the dealers stole my brand new plugs and put used ones in it!
I now have the latest design of plug and boy does she go!
Now to tackle the dealer who couldn't or wouldn't diagnose a simple problem.
Once again many thanks
