hahahahahaha hehehehehehe do you have a scanner?! id love to see that- fooking service people talking out their a$& and putting it in writing. you gotta post that if you can. i really did just LOL

but seriously that "r" is probably just the way they put flashes on their paperwork like putting "performed x flash" not a name just a variable. the most current flash is still the z/m flash and if you already had the previous M then nothing changed. if they had read, remembered and understood the update to MSP04 they wouldnt have even done the flash. did they put down a part number of any kind?

Ok, anyone else heard of the r flash? i didint find anything when i looked it up.

There is no "R" flash on the 8. The latest update does take the car back to the "M" alpha with a different prefix.

The 6s is actually on the "R" level.

i think (without checking) that bulletin number is msp04. when they gave you M before they rpobably didnt close that issue in the system. now it will be.

It looks like they are still off.

I took my 8 in yesterday for a number of items, MSP04, poor gas mileage (9-10), brake squeal and excessive dust, Check Engine Light on, CD player that skips when you are going 80 and crosss those lane divider bumps, severe rear wheel hop when you dump the clutch and stand on it. You know just a few things.

Results:

MSP04 - Unable to update PCM due to download errors with the WDS.

Poor gas mileage - They believe this is related to the MSP04

Brake Squeal - Replaced front brake pads.

CEL - Gas cap not seating properly, replaced cap.(This is the first CEL I have had in 9 months and the new gas cap I noticed, has a different closing mechanism than my old one that actually pops out when you open it.

CD Player - They could not duplicate. (possible because they air temp had dropped 30 degrees and the air pressure was down)

Rear Wheel hop - They could not duplicate. (Probably because it had just rained and they could only get them to spin, In my experience the wheel hop is actually worse on wet pavement when they will bounce up and down violently. Something is not right. Same with DSC and TC on and off)

Does anyone else have the wheel hop I described?

is this true guys? because mazda was claiming more horsepower than they 8 actually had, and when you bought the car and that they didn't notify you of that and had you sign a form for this acknowledgement, and if you didn't receive a $500 gift certificate or something like that, that you would be able to return the rx-8? that is what i heard from a guy that used to be the sales manager for mazda here in las vegas? any truth to that?

That's pretty close. I think there was another option to have your oil changed free for a period of time.

The flash error was corrected on the 34.6 update as I recall..the dealer should have 34.8 as of last week. Maybe they are not updating the WDS as they should.

If you had a P0455/456 code for a fuel cap it will be the first I've heard of.

If they can't duplicate an issue with your car maybe they're not driving it the way you do. Take someone from the dealership for a ride and show them.

This issue was for pre-buys only? If you where involved you would have been contacted months ago.

The flash (34.6) was released to correct the code error around the first of Dec.

If your local is at least at 34.6 you should be good to go.

Thanks, also forgot to ask about CEL that seems to sometimes appear after fuel fillup. Understand this may involve gas cap fix? Is this also a TSB?

The EVAP system on your car is what we call "pressure based" ILO the old "vacuum based"

I wrote it up on some forum somewhere..3.6.8? haha I don't recall but I will find it if anyone is interested.

I see you joined in 10/03..have you had the codes pulled recently?

Edit...there are no TSB's for the fuel cap (for the Rx-8)

Just got my recall postcard yesterday for the MSP 04 flash, and am bumping this thread to ask for people to report on any effects they've noticed from getting the flash.

Just got the latest M-flash. No problem after 50 or so miles. Noticed a bit more power at low RPM's and some nice grunt at the top of the rev range. I dunno what affect will be on mpg...

Post M Flash

Just got the new M flash. My 8 seems to have less power all throuigh the rpm range. I don't get the surge of power at about 5,000 rpms that I previously had. HMMM. It ran fine before the flash. No flooding,no warning lights,no probs. Damn . Shoulda left it alone. Oh yeah I'm averaging 20mpg from the day I bought it unless I get too heavy in the right foot! Cheers

but could i return the rx-8?i mean, the horsepower is still not as much as claimed, the gas mileage is atrocious, they've already done two reflashes on the ecu, the engine flooded, a/c doesn't cool as it should, it's been nothing but problems. i love the car but it's frustrating. so, what's the verdict guys? would i be able to return it or no?

Haven't had the codes pulled. This car belongs to our daughter who is away at school so I only get work done when she is at home (I.E. the holidays). Hope to have it to the shop today. Thanks for the info.

I would say that's a no. They can say the gas and the flooding are your fault, and they have a fix for the a/c. Maybe you should try to find another brand of different octane and you will get better gas results, unless you have an auto. I think most of the bad milage comes from those.

I have a MT.

I took it in when it was 2 months old because the mileage was 13-14. They agreed that was poor mileage. Ultimately they reflashed with M. Mileage improved to as much as 17.

I took it in when it was 6 months old because of poor mileage. Back down to 13-14. They did nothing, but the lead technician did say that he was going to a training class the next week and he would ask about it and call me back. He never called and last week at 9 months old, I got a CEL and took it in again for the mileage (now down to 9-10, 69 miles showing on just under half a tank) along with other items.

They said the CEL was caused by the fuel cap (PO456 EVAP LEAK) and they replaced it. I will note that they did not retest it after they did so.

As far as the mileage goes, they said they were having troubles with the WDS downloading to cars and could not perform MSP04 or check the poor mileage. They said to bring it back.

So now I have a car that I bought to be a daily driver that sits in my garage 5 or 6 days a week because of the mileage. I have tried different brands of gas from Murphy to Shell and I do see a difference in mileage with the Shell Premium but only a few tenths of a mile per gallon. I have tried babying it as well as driving it hard and everything in between. Driving it really hard seems to make it go up to 10 mpg while babying it makes it hit the bottom with an alltime low of 8.9 mpg.

We won't talk about the cup holder that is great with coffee but ruins anything with ice in it, or the Wheel hop from hell if you dump the clutch at 6-7000 rpm like I did once in frustration, or the plastic burning smell that they say is normal but only started up when I went past 8000 miles on the car, or the CD player that skips when you go over lane divider bumps at 70mph (except on a cold day), or the seat heaters that only worked once and Mazda compaired with another vehicle to see if they were working or any of the other little issues I have had that Mazda closes on the ticket as "COULD NOT DUPLICATE".

I could deal with all the above, if I could just get it to pass a gas station.
