Uh oh. I didn't hear about that until you just mentioned it. I got my car flashed as soon as I got the recall letter (although when I first got my car, my dealer told me I already had the M flash, but that's another story). When I did go to the dealer to get the flash, I picked up a pamphlet that was sitting around that spoke about the CEL problem. I haven't read through it, to be honest, but if you haven't seen it, I might be able to scan it and post it.

Does anyone know if there is a new TSB out with this info? I have an appointment tomorrow for my first service, I need the flash, and judging by previous conversations, they might be a little difficult I feel better when I can show them paper that they should have already but probably don't read.

Thanks for clearing this up.
well according to the MSP04 update the H/M and Z/L were at the same level so if you had the former you didnt need the latter. The Z/M just fixes a bug in the Z/L. I dont know what if any change was made from the H files to the Z files. Having said that and with my thing with part numbers i have my opinion which is just pure speculation. i think the H levels were sort of RX8 1.x and they had gotten so ahead of where that code started that they decided they had really changed so much that they were ready to call it RX8 2.0. so 1.9 and 2.0 are essentially the same. again just my opinion but i think my logic is valid. people change part numbers for 2 reasons. the part has significantly changed or they got a new computer system that cant use the old part number. i think it is safe to say in this case it's the part has significantly changed from the original.

not a new one. they updated MSP04 and the halt and restart were done by contacting the service centers.

Same here; got the M flash in early October, and I saw an immediate decrease in avg MPG from 21 to 19. I've got an AT and noticed that it wants to upshift sooner than before. If I'd have known this ahead of time, I would have left it alone (I'm guessing I had the equivalent of L flash since my build date is Feb 2004).

Guess I'll just wait until they get their feces in a single pedal appendage covering.

Wonder what's different about the M flash now? I got mine done in May and my mileage has steadily gone up, not much but just a bit. No problems caused by the flash. ??

Gee, that makes me feel good now. I purchased the 8 on 10/23/04 and got the CEL on the way home. Brought it in for service on 10/28/04 and they did the M flash. So far, so good though.

"no M-flash for me for the foreseeable future, and hopefully no more screws"quote

Yea, at least this one didn't penetrate anything

mark: I think I can live without the flash, I surived for five months, and the car is just fine...that's why I never pushed for the M-flash with my dealer previously. I just thought since they sent the letter, it's probably better to have it than not. Turns out it's the opposite. I'll stick with my J (or whatever configuration I have.

Mazda had a "m" flash over the summer. Then Last month, they sent out letters stating that all cars need the "new and improved" m flash, also called here m2. Then they found an error in the code and have halted the service requests to update all cars. So, currently all 8 owners are running on old, outdated code or defective code.

I got the M and now I got the CEL

I got the M flash, and then a couple of weeks later I got the CEL. I took it to the dealership and they told me what I already knew, that the new flash was causing the problem. There was nothing they could do about it, so they sent me on my way. So now I have to wait for a new flash to come out, all along hoping no situation actually requires the check engine light. I think it's funny that my recall now has a recall. In my opinion Mazda is not a very good car company.

I know, I wondered what was different about it. I never got a letter. Which is fine by me since the new one is so troublesome.
