i have had my "8" off the ground for a week and a day now awaiting crush washers for the tranny fill/drain plugs and the diff fill/drain plugs. anyone else have any problems with their dealer having these in stock?

it makes me wonder what they would do if someone brought an "8" in for them to do it. would they reuse the washers already installed?

i ordered these crush washers last monday, april 17, and they're still not here. does anyone know of a place to get these washers a little quicker?

Are you serious? I never replace those, just reuse them.

 

You can reuse them a few times before needing to replace them.

 

Mine had the diff fill and drains, but no transmission washers. They also only had 1/2 dozen oil crush washers (and the guy said they use the same ones for all cars). This time I'm not going to wait and just reuse for the transmission.

Anyone know what the "17" material is that the transmission crush washers are made of? I know for the "21" copper diff fill crush washers, you can heat them with a butane torch until glowing and put in water. Then they can be reused (a few times).

if you have new ones around, sure why not use it ?

but if u dont have new ones around ... well, re-use the old one should be fine, just make sure u dont over tighten it.

 

Reused mine as well, even tho' I had some new washers on hand, as they were fine at 20k (and I didn't want to disturb my under-car nap.

 

Just did mine. I had new oil washer. I had new diff washers, but the copper fill they gave me (even though I gave them the exact part number) was too small, so I torched it and dipped in cold water and reused. I reused the transmission washers. Just make sure to tighten everything to within the correct torque ranges.

 

Tranny and diff lube replacement is an "elective procedure", if you will. If there's no emergency, what's the problem with ordering the parts? Sure, most times you can get away without 'em, but they do have a purpose.

On the other hand, why is it a chronic problem for dealers to stock this ****? A few washers is going to impact their storage space? They can't carry the $5 of inventory? Mazda has some weird washer neurosis. I remember with the Miata, it was about 50/50 that they'd hand me the wrong washer, and it never got any better after 10 or 15 years. One of the reasons I went to a Fumoto Valve day 1 with the RX-8.

 

Thanks for the Fumoto Valve recommendation. I'm going to get one for my oil. I wouldn't want one for my transmission or differential though - when I changed those this week, the magnetized plug had a ton of shavings sludge.

 

Intriguing. Does our '8 take the F-106 Fumoto oil pan ball valve?

Does the length of the valve, especially with the required adaptor, cause issues with ground clearance?

 

Nope, no problems with ground clearance. The valve was one of the best things i ever bought.
