Cel coolent light.

I have had issues with the coolent tank cel on the dash. Finally got tired of messing with it and just simply disconnected it. Maybe some one who isn't under the hood like my self should not disconnect it but for the last year with it disconnected i have no issues lol.

Totally a bad design for that coolent float and sensor. I currently have 101,000 miles.

Not a bad plan as long as you check the coolant level at every fill up. I've heard people say "but if you have a sudden rise in coolant temperature you'll never know it till it's too late." Bullshit! If you have a sudden rise in coolant temperature there'll be plenty of other signs that you need to shut down immediately.

I had a problem with the low coolant light coming on intermittently and over a period of time coming on and staying on. I cleaned the connector with electrical contact cleaner and squirted some dielectric grease into it and reconnected it ... problem gone; no more low coolant light.

I'm the one who pointed that out. I had a Saab and once, while driving, the plastic cooling tank somehow came into contact with a hot engine part. Melted a little hole in the tank; coolant drained out. I was alerted when the coolant temp gauge suddenly rose. Immediately stopped the car, turned off the engine, discovered the hole and, since I was in the middle of nowhere, temporarily plugged it with chewing gum!

Good idea, but i tried that so my failure must have been in the sensor it self,in any case i just unplugged it. No worries i am under my hood every day and i am one of thhose nuts that is always in the garage dividing my time between my rx8 and my F-150 4x4 so there you go.

But, and it's a big BUT, if you develop a coolant leak on the road, you could overheat it before you know it and kill your engine.

Reni, BigCajun actually understated the chances of a cooling system failure that results in low coolant. It happens far more frequently than wheels falling off.

Any pressure failure at all, either pressurizing more or loss of pressure can easily result in coolant literally pumping from the overflow until the coolant bottle is empty. Unless you have something in place to monitor the actual overflow from the coolant bottle, this can all happen without your knowledge until suddenly your temperature needle starts spiking, then drops to nothing (Without any coolant on it to provide a value).

It's not even rare.

And actually, I carry a torque wrench and check the lug nuts regularly. Having one actually fall off on the highway due to a shop's negligence makes a life-long impression on you.

That is correct a coolent leak can occur any time, stuff breaks i get it. Even though i am under my hood every day( I am retired) stuff still breaks. For me it works to just unplug it.My belief is that it was a misguided design and is there fore in my opinion only, a piece of$#@* design. My guess is i will replace it at some point but not today.

Funny you said the torq wrench thing because i also carry a torq wrench in my rx8 and one in my F-150 4x4. One day about 4 years ago and too many beers i finished the break job on the truck and while driving it came off the truck and rolled through a gas station at high speed and nearly hit the pump and a old man pumping gas lol.

I do not advocate just unplugging thing for other folks but cool thing is , my car my decision and if it breaks my heart burn nuff said.

You seem defensive.
My response to your wanting to unplug it is also for the benefit of others who may read the thread and not think about it leaking while driving.

After driving awhile with the failed coolant sensor unplugged, I thought better of the situation and just bought a new bottle and sensor from Mazmart. A small price to pay for some piece of mind.

It has been unplugged for a while now, so why am i defensive for saying my car my decision. Just because i don't do some thing you might do doesn't make me defensive at all. Look it is simple. i unplugged it , end of story. I think you just like to argue. So let it go and move on it's over son.

For the benifit od all who read this it is simple i unplugged it and that is that. I already explained i do this atmy own peril if you will. I have been driving the car for almost 100,000 miles and again it's my car my issue if it breaks.THis undue attention to this is obvious to an adult. You keep chasising me . Just stop and think for a momenbt son it's not a big deal to me and it works this way for me to each his own right?, or areb you one of those do as i say not as i do folks? Just let it go and if you don't stop chasing me on this it is soon obvious to the most non attentive of folk that you just like to argue. Thanks for the advise .

Any issue with reservoir replacement?

Have a new coolant reservoir bottle w/sensor, been procrastinating putting it in. Think you guys may have pushed my button, might as well go ahead and do it. Mine's a 2007 Rx-8, only 26K miles. Had 165,000 on my 87 Rx-7 years ago, finally bought this 8 used in 2013. Anyway, any issues encountered with the replacement procedure, or is it a simple R&R, plug and play (as opposed to uplug and play)? Other than replacing some of the ridiculously priced coolant, of course.

Still looking, found this Floatless Coolant Sensor which sounds like a workable solution. No cost listed, have contacted company via email. Anyone tried one of these? Installation looks pretty simple, well shown in the attached installation manual.

Why not install the tank you already have?
I've never done it, but it shouldn't be very hard.

Yes, there is one easy-to-do misstep! Search this forum, as I don't know the details, but apparently it's very easy to break the connection to the radiator, necessitating radiator replacement! Search and you'll find out how to avoid this and install properly.

Thanks Rotorheads, good feedback. Big Cajun: First, Love Cajun cookin', nothing beats a good jambalaya! Back to the topic, why not just replace the tank? Well, I probably will, using the cautions above. But, I am intrigued by potentially correcting the engineering "flaw" that caused the problem to begin with, avoiding a future recurrence. I may do both, replace the tank, but have the floatless sensor on hand. Price quote ended up being 110USD for the device.

We've got a cooking thread.
I do all of the cooking at home, I'm pretty good, just ask me.
Feel free to drop in & ask anything, I've already posted a bunch of stuff.
There's another Cajun, logalinipoo, who contributes to it occasionally.

Thanks Travis.
Yeah, log's in the big sandbox, but he still checks in occasionally.
His day is winding down when ours is just starting.

Adding myself to the list of random coolant level sensor/light coming on.

As I understand it, some are choosing to simply disconnect this sensor. If you do this, you must keep tabs on your coolant level manually by checking the bottle at least at every fill up, if not every day. One must also watch that temperature gauge like a hawk...

+1^
Yes, some people are also suggesting disconnecting the warning light to new members, which I find irresponsible.

$150 fix vs. risking $5000 for a rebuilt engine is just plain stupid.

If someone is too cheap or lazy to spend $150 and a few hours to fix it properly, then they own the wrong car.
