Coolant Light on Dash
Add my '04 67k mile Rx-8 to the Coolant Light List
My coolant light started to come on at higher RPM freeway driving. If I lower the RPMs and slow down a bit the light will go off after a few seconds.....pick it back up and the light comes back on. Coolant level is fine....never has moved in the 67,000 miles that I have owned the car.
I did change out the coolant today and that did not make a difference. I am way out of warranty, so might have to make an order for a new res bottle.
Thanks for everyones contributions to the forums.

I would like to add myself to the Radiator Light On Club (R-LOC's). I would like to thank all of you that had provided insight to this problem.
Anyway living in Palm Springs area my RX-8 always had the water gauge needle 2 lines under the half way mark. I was very impressed and pleased because during summer it gets 120 out here and no problems. It's a '06 and I have so far 60K+ miles on the car, but lately the radiator light comes on at high speeds (75-90mph) or high revs. I change the thermostat but still, nothing. Then i decided to look here. Maybe next time I will look sooner.
Thanks again

i guess since summer is starting for people in the south part the temps go up and these lights come on. i'm having the same problem at highway speeds but once i get off throttle it goes away. had some issue last summer but came on only once. now its constant.
Wait 1 year and expect it to come back coz that's what happen to me. I say remove the sensor and check the coolant once in a while.
we know whats up. there's like 45 pages on it. the sensor is not guaranteed to fail, but it has a high likelyhood of it. nothing you're going to do about it. except replace bottles or clean which will only work temporarily
Does anyone know why the light comes on at high rpm?
It's kind of a cute effect, as long as it doesn't happen too often. If a passenger notices it, I tell them it's a Rolls Royce detector, and they should look around and try to spot the Rolls.

I think its because of the way the sensor operates (float contact sorta thing) in combination with it going bad that its easily set off by the coolant being agitated/gurgling at high rpms.
ok this is waht mine is doing at first the light would come on when i got on it and would go off when i slowed down and then it just stayed on and now mine is pushing fluid out so dont know what to do now it dont over heat or run hot so i was going to do the cap and the thermo and see if that does anythingand flush out the old fluid and clean the tank thats all i know what to do at this point what you guys think??

The problem is in the tank design and the materials used. As the magnet/float rubs up and down the center post it removes material from the magnet. When enough of it is removed it is less likely to float.
I had good success in repairing my tank see my post https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php?...14&postcount=4
my tank problem was the float wouldn't float.

Interesting Hugh.
I'm going to link your thread into mine that I had done awhile ago.

So........I was leaning toward the float losing buoyancy over time as well. I wasn't real sure if it was through heating and cooling cycles or from crud build-up. I guess if it is crud build up on the float itself, this could explain why cleaning(flushing) appears to work for a short period of time??? Not sure if the float material is getting rubbed off by riding up and down on the shaft that cleaning would help at all, so I'm wondering if you just added more buoyancy that was lost........but not through rubbing?

And............if he continues, P/S failure due to dirty contacts will be next.
I was having the same problem aswell. Went to the dealer today and said I had a problem with the low coolant light coming on randomly. He said "you need a new bottle, let me see if we have one". Just like that. He pulled my car up on the computer and said that warranty will cover it as long as I don't have over 50k miles. PHEW! I'm at 49,100
So I'll be getting that replaced tomorrow. Thanks folks for this thread, if I hadn't read it I probably would have waited a little longer and then it'd be too late.
