Clutch feels like it is grabbing in neutral with the pedal disengaged

Sitting at a light this morning and the car felt like the clutch was trying to grab while I am in neutral with the clutch pedal depressed...it could have been the motor. Not sure because it didn't last for long....has anyone experienced this?

Sorry if this is a dumb question or if the terminology is off.

Thanks

Not a dumb question...

Here's a really simplified explanation of How the clutch works:

When your foot is off the pedal, the clutch is fully engaged (by springs in the pressure plate). This is regardless of the gear that you are in - or in neutral.

When your foot is pressing the clutch, the clutch is fully disengaged (by pushing an arm against the aforementioned springs on the pressure plate).

Any foot position in between offers a percentage of engagement / disengagement.

Therefore, the clutch is doing the same 'job' in neutral as in any gear. The transmission comes after the clutch.

Your clutch should be 'grabbing' with the same clamping force at all times.

Probably, you have noticed a problem as follows:

In our car, the circuit between the clutch pedal and the clutch is hydraulic. The fluid is shared with the braking system.

Note that in traffic, on a hot day, there are (up 'till 2006) problems with the fluid overheating in the clutch slave cylinder at the tranny. Think brake-fade on a long downhill. This changes the pedal feel and engagement point. Over time, this could also require your clutch hose needing air bled from the system. There is an updated slave cylinder that addresses this problem (although I've still experienced fade crawling along the highway behind an accident).

So, based on you sketchy info... this is my guess. I stand to be corrected. Please provide more info.
