There you go again . If you make a remark and don't quote the person you are refering to it is hard to work out who your remark was directed at . You are guilty of this ALL the time team .

Anyway , this just in :

The Dwell table does not control dwell at startup !!!

So whatever the setting is for the stock coils at startup , is what you are stuck with for aftermarket coils .

Could be what we are fighting here .....

Update :

Since fitting an upgraded starter motor this problem has completely gone away for me .

I do still suspect that these (D585) coils are not as good for startup as the stock coils but this only becomes an issue if there are other factors in play EG:
*compression is lower than optimum
* pre-upgrade starter is in service.
*Battery is weak

etc etc

Interesting,
I still have the old starter.

I recently had a flood situation when I tried to start the car after sitting for two weeks and the battery was "weak"

I likely have low compression as well.

That's what we call in this country : a trifecta

Installing my new starter cleared my power steering issue...Starting up was draining my battery prior to the upgraded starter.

Indeed Sir, indeed.

After all this is said and done I'm just happy that wasn't the only one experiencing this strangeness.

Now however, while I have no supporting evidence this implies that I have had low compression for sometime now.

I'm not sure how to take this ...

I'm sure that there is just enough of us that have the "trifecta" of conditions to make it a non-issue for you. I think this thread has taken some of the mystery away. I believe the BHR coils are a great product but I always wondered about this starting issue that one or two others and myself encountered.

Charles you and I spoken a few times about the hard start issues and you've always suggested that it is likely compression issues (less than optimal). Seems you're right as usual.

Combined with the other conditions
- Dwell for ignition cannot be modified (by ATR)
- Slower Starter motor

And you've got the Trifecta.

I've always meant to get the upgraded starter motor but I just didn't think it necessary, I thought this one was working fine, wrong again.

As far as compression goes, I do have a compression tester, I just haven't gotten around to doing it. It will be interesting ...

Reasons: (1) if the stock coils are already toast, new coils will make a big difference, (2) confirmation bias, or (3) could be true.

In my case, with a ~15k motor, installing the BHR ignition made no difference that I could tell. That doesn't imply any dissatisfaction on my part, nor does is mean there were no differences, only that with my poorly instrumented eyes, ears, and butt, I couldn't detect them.

I do have a question/comment related to this thread though, inspired by Team/Brettus/wcs comments about sensitivity to proper grounding.

Is the current flow on the ground wire constant?

If it is not, it's likely to have high frequency content related to the charge and discharge of the coils. If so, the ground wire becomes an inductor, and does not present a pure resistance. That will make the coil grounding sensitive to a lot of seemingly random factors. Trust me, grounding with HF, RF, and/or broadband noise around will drive one nuts. A remedial measure is to use a flat, braided, strap rather than a wire. In the absence of data, it's something to try.

This is the experience of myself and a handful of other people who all seem to have had another issue (aside from the coils)compounding things.
I swapped the coils in and out twice to confirm my suspicions . There was clearly much better startup with the stock coils when I had the slow starter in - it really was a night and day difference .

I my mind there is no mystery , however I do still believe the 585s are a superior coil and will continue to use them now that my starting problem is resolved.

That is why the second ground is on a capacitor.

Well...It's official...My BHR Kit is no bueno...However, that is only one of my problems...The other is being investigated right now...Possibly fuel pump failure as well.

Had my car put on a dyno twice today...The OEM coils brought me up 17hp :/

I really don't want to go back to OEM coils...

Time to send Charles an email and see what advice he offers. Did you actually test the coils?

Yep...That's my plan...I PM'd him, and completely forgot he prefers email...So I'm about to send it.

The coils were tested...The rotary shop also told me they found white burn marks along the edges...They even insulated each coil to see if that would help.

I'm not sure...I'm a hour away...But I trust these guys...All they work with are rx7s and rx8s.

Either way...The fact that I would dyno 17hp higher with OEM coils tells me there's obviously something going on with my BHR coils.

Not a problem though...I'm sure Charles will help me out.

Possibly, it could also have been a simple grounding issue or spark plug wire issue with the BHR kit and not the actual coils. The ground on the BHR kit is very important.

Thank you for your help, Charles!

I really appreciate it...I'll be back to BHR in no time.
