Sort of, did a hard days running through the hill country a month or so ago and it held up fine. I actually blew my radiator and limped home and i noticed the oil temps were up a lot (still safe range, never over 215F) so the oil cooler was taking on the extra burden since the radiator was leaking.

I have the statewide meet coming up and it will be the real test, we go pretty damn hard and usually for longer time periods than on the track. Also, it is in the 80-90's now so we will see. the only issue I am having now is with my shitty Koyo radiator running about 15F higher than my OEM one. Lesson learned, pay now or pay later. I am tossing around the idea of a small 3rd radiator but I will probably end up just getting the BHR or Mazmart.

Its cooling capabilities are amazing though, i can easily get oil temps up to 210F driving her pretty hard and the weekend before last I went for a blast through the country hills near my dads place and got the oil temps up quite a bit and as soon as you hit a little straight at speed, the oil temps drops like crazy.

I will probably be upgrading to the Earl's thermostat real soon and moving my oil temp sensor or adding another.

3rd water rad ? you have 2 already ?

I have only one stock oil cooler and the other side is an oil cooler converted to a water rad . Has worked really well for me (track tested under boost) .

Sorry, I mean second radiator The factory coolers are actually pretty good, I think the downfall is the thermostat and lines. I am thinking of redoing everything and if I do, I will use better coolers but in the stock locations. What oil temps do you see on the track?

Man you are brave. I love gauges, too bad they take up so much space.

you could say that - although people have said that the oil temps don't go much above the water temps and oil can take more than water can so ...........

That is true. I am just OCD and like to constantly monitor everything.

Why would you like to go back to the factory oc locations? Is your single cooler has affects on the water temps by warming the air before it gets the water radiator?

I believe the factory locations are better in terms of cooling because of the more direct air flow. I do not believe my single cooler is blocking too much flow to the radiator. My radiator is not sealed very well and so I will be looking at sealing it up this weekend. I will also be looking at opening up space behind the radiator and fans to allow heat to escape. I may look at some type of venting but I'm not sure yet because I like a clean simple look on the car.

I am still experimenting a bit and I would like to get temps down to about 200F under high load high heat situations. Right it is still within safe limits at 215F or so under high load situations but I am just thinking in terms of max oil temperatures in the engine and pan.

I think measuring oil temps in the pan is best. I am measuring on the return line so my logic tells me that when I am seeing max temps of 215 on the return line that I am seeing higher temps in the engine.

My oil still resembles honey when I replace it for the most part, and is not very dark so that tells me that it is holding up pretty well but we will see through the coming months. I have a feeling this Texas summer is going to be hotter than usual.

In this case I think you need a bigger oil cooler. There is so much space for a larger cooler.
What is the rate between of the two factory oc's capacity and your afermarket single cooler's capacity?

I would agree that most of the benifit you are seeing is your much less restricive lines and thermo bypass unit.

That being said I still like the idea of one cooler as you dont have as many lines to run. Some day when I get my single core unit I will like to have both the fittings on the cooler on the same side and run as short of lines as I can. I would like to also incorprate a small water to oil cooler and if I can find it a 200* thermo bypass unit. I do like the idea of mounting the cooler in the fender wells but am not convinced there is room unless I had a custom oil cooler made for me'.......

i think its time for me to get a oil temp gauge as to run comparisons with the stock vs 9k's temps at high operating temps.

I am inclined to believe that a two cooler system would be better, but only because you would have no interference with the air flow to the radiator. Rerunning the lines is a must along with the bypass thermostat, so at cooler temps you are still flowing thru one cooler until the heat builds then the second one opens and the temp drop wouldnt be such a shock to the engine.

Yeah, I am thinking of replacing this cooler with a single Fluidyne dual pass unit that has the lines on both sides. The dual pass units are much thicker and I think there is room back there.

But I am also looking for a thick single cooler that I can put in one of the factory locations. It's all about efficiency. I will take a look at the grill this weekend too and make sure I am getting max air flow.

I've seen my temp as high as 240! I would love to get worried over 215

dont worry about oil temps other than trying to get the oil warm enough , fast enough.
track oil temps on other type cars rountinely see 250-260 F.
If you keep your coolant (on track or anywhere) below 220 your oil will be Ok.
Oil does not help in cooling this engine that much--some yes, but not much--right?
Concentrate on coolant temps and the oil temps will follow.

^^ April Fools day? Denny...what you smoking dude

The oil cooling is much more important on this car than your usual piston engine...........

Yeah I sealed up my Koyo and my coolant temps are now in check again (that's what i get for going cheap). But honestly I mainly pay attention to oil temps. In an ideal world coolant temps and oil temps in our engines should stay reasonably close to each other.

See? Seal it up and you are ok. You owe me a beer for showing ya the mazdaspeed Rad pic

What I'm thinking is the koyo v series(the one most ppl are seeing) should be the same if nit a bit better than stock. What most ppl failed to do is that they never sealed it up correctly.

Yeah I think sealing things up is key. I also had not "burped" the system correctly by removing the coolant hose at the throttle body which i just read so I will do that after work today.

I also saw the one that I posted where I saw the oil temps dont matter that much!! I plead temp insanity.

I just recently gave this cooler to a buddy for use in his FC and I was trying to find pics. But I can't find all of the pics now because I had them uploaded to an old site so i will have to find them on my PC and get them uploaded again.
