The Rotten Egg Strikes

I've been trying to find any comments you guys make about the rotten egg smell that happens everytime the 8 is started. I back up into the exhaust and it fills the passengers noses with that wonderful scent they probably smell at an egg factory. I was always under the impression that this happened to every 8, but I'm starting to reguess this as I scroll through the posts and can't seem to find much. You guys experience this smell on a daily basis?

I used to have that smell, but it went away by itself. Is that normal?

Are you sure someone didn't eat something that didn't agree with them and they are using the exhaust as an excuse?

I think it has something to do with having a new exhaust system. I remember my car had the rotten egg smell when I first got it, but it went away after the first few weeks of ownership and never came back... until I got rear-ended.

My exhaust system had to be replaced due to the accident, and sure enough, rotten egg smell is back. I'm hoping it's temporary, like it was before!

Egg factory? You mean one of these?

I have never experienced it - but I also haven't changed my exhaust. I am planning on getting a RB here in the next month or so. I will let you know if I experience the same problem.

Well it seemed to happen between 10 - 15K kms...now I'm at about 17K kms and I don't notice it anymore.

What a cute chick; I saw it was named Amanda. That wouldn't be a bad name for the 8. Well thus far I'm just glad that I haven't been on any 1st dates in the 8 where it let off that smell cause I'll be a single man if that happens. I can hear her with all her friends now, "Yeah, he had a nice car, but what a rotten stomach!"

I had a smell for about the first month I had the car...it went away. Just tell your date it's the rotary breaking itself in and make something complicated-sounding up

Mine too but it went away already...

Can be from improper interior cleaning procedure, wet leather?

Or also from the aircon vent filter.
If your garage is humid and you havent used your car for awhile, there maybe some fungus buildup in the filter which you may want to clean.

And speaking of smells, there is a burning oil/petrol smell that I get in the cabin when I rev the car hard, like over 7000rpm.

Its probably the cat, one of our local guy had that same problem. Basically the cat burn out. Nothing got to do with how many miles on it, its probably just faulty from factory. It was a factory fault in the earlier batch of RX8. One more sign to look out for is if your exhaust tip is yellowish?

hope you fix that problem soon.

Mr. Lock & Load is right......

Sounds like your local refinery is leaving too much sulphur in their gas.

Try a different brand, stick with the big names. The cat will clean the smell up, and a bad cat will let it thru, but you are talking about a cold start, when the cat is still cold - that is when the stinky hi-sulphur gas is obvious.

May I recommend some Optimax?

I've noticed it once or twice with the 8 and it happened now and then with three cars before that. Bad catalytic converter in 4 cars? I don't think so.

Stop buying the cheap gas.

Also, try to use premium.

Let the car warm up a bit before backing out.
