hey all, i have been doing some research, and i think i want to install an msd dis-4 and aftermarket coils to help get a little more spark energy and hopefully improve the fuel economy.
my question is has anyone installed any aftermarket ignition system and if so , did you encounter any problems.....................
thanks for any info

There are no after market ignitions & coils for the RX-8. If there were more spark will not do anything for fuel economy. Nothing helps fuel economy it's a rotary. The closest thing out there would be to get a Canzoomer piggy back unit and tune it yourself. Very little piston engine tuning knowledge applies to the RX-8.

MSD won't work. The AEM C2DI will work, though. The 8's coils fire on the leading edge of the pulse. The MSD will only fire on the falling edge. THe AEM can be set to fire on the leading edge. The MSD will end-up missing at high RPMs since it is not synched correctly.
The bottom line is that a CDI ignition won't help you much. They really help where you have the coils firing in wasted spark at high RPM. Since the 8 doesn't use wasted spark, and there is one coil per plug, the CDI is a waste of $$.

Your charting new ground here best of luck. Two years worth of posts on this board and only four other threads mention aem c2di

The link below is for the RX-7 (FD) $1,600 It does show it "might" work with a ton of custom tuning.

I had a write-up here about installing the MSD DIS ignition a while back. I don't know where it went.
Since I was using the E-Manage, I was able to resolve the trigger issue using a simple circuit with NPN transistors to invert the pulses.
There was, however, no real noticible advantage.
The MSD only has one cap, so it can only fire the leading coils.
The AEM is better because it has two caps and can fire the trailing as well.
It would be fairly easy to install the AEM and a set of DIS coils. Total cost would be around $600. I'm not sure if there would be any actual benefit.
I may do it in the near future just for ***** and giggles.

The main advantages of a CDI are longer spark duration at low RPM (for economy and idle quality) and higher spark current at high RPM.
The factory coils supply enough current to always fire the plugs under normal conditions. My idle was always good. So, there wasn't much to improve other than eliminating the inherent problems with the stock coils which are temperature and dwell related.
