9K Can give you an answer about this Air Duct as I have the latest EPC.

In Series 2 Auto's Mazda went from the VFAD in Auto's 6 Port (same as manual), to the non VFAD in Auto 6 Port, they are actually using the 4 Port Tube from the Series 1 Auto.

The change from VFAD (Smaller Tube Duct) to Larger Tube Duct with No VFAD was from November 1st, 2008 Production ONWARDS....as of December 2010 there has been no further changes.

So basically you have a 4 Port Air Duct with NO VFAD...Part # N3H1-13-200B.

Why have Mazda done this, IMO purely Cost Saving, with the strong Yen they are pinching whatever they can to save a $$, like removing all the MAZDA trunk lid Badges on 2010~ models (all), Saves them over a $1mil a year.

Apologies for the long delay.

basically I took the factory intake tube (no VFAD) out of a 2010 6 port Auto because it is of a greater diameter that the VFAD one and just ran generic intake tubing from autozone down to the front opening.

I'm not sure why the 09+ autos do not have VFAD since they are 6 ports.

Why They did it...and already answered, they went from VFAD to NO VFAD in 6 Port Series 2 6 speed Auto's.

Plus, Auto's do not MAX RPM as High as Manuals..even though they are 6 port.

So no new Parts made for this, just existing design from S1 4 speed Auto, it is cheaper to make, simple, so it saves Mazda money.

Here is a weird (contradiction) one for you...but normal Mazda..
Mazda have gone from under hood 'Wiring Condenser' used in ALL Series 1's (FC, and FD's), Discontinued in Series 2's and now reintroduced in S2's from 3rd August 2009 Production.

Hmmmm, I realize the redline is different but I wonder what that has to do with eliminating the VFAD?

As you know that is the only real difference between the 6 port engines, RPM and when it come to air intake the use of non VFAD...that is all, draw your own conclusions.

I have been all through Parts Info and there is nothing else there suggesting "why", I still say COST...

Online access to Mazda Japan Parts shows No changes to any current production...in fact I cant see any RX-8 production for 2011..unless they are behind in updates which is possible.
However looking at VIN numbers over the past few years there has only been around 1,000 8's made.
