dunno about Autozone.

you might have compression issue.
Just got off the phone with Mazda USA and my local dealer, I am going in tomorrow at 8am for the compression test. I don't know how to feel about it.. do I hope for a bad test so I get the engine warranty and the new engine??? they are only charging me $104 for the test and the dealer seems very easy to work with!

^ its hard to say. On one hand you hope your engine isnt dead, but on the other hand, if you are having bad enough problems with your car, you might hope for a new engine. You may have to wait a while though as it does take some time for the whole process to be worked out. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

To much to type on a phone lol

Scanner is from harborfreight u can buy it online or at a store near ya if u have one.
I paid 120 for it. But they sell it in the store for like 160. If you find it on sale on their site u can go in with the page loaded on your phone with the sale price and they match it.

Az DOES sell the 2.0kw starter for 07 but it wasnt instock when I tried to check out online.

Fourman, good luck on the test.

if what 1.3_furrrrrrry () said its true, then the AZ/AAP starters are actually older style, SLOWER starter >_<, I mean it works but not good for too cold/hot climate.

I wonder if they will ever update their part with the newest information ...

or just wait until they update their parts list with 09+ models. 09+ will always have newest starter so that might do the trick.
thanks, but if this starter is older style, I won't buy it.
First I'm going to write to the customer support because the starter began to fail just after I had taken my car back from my local dealer. (for pcm upgrade and oil cooling hose changing).
I want them to pay the totality or at least a part of the 1000$ they ask me to change the starter !

Okay Boys and Girls, Final Cut! (I hope...)
Added AZ 1.4kw and Mazda 2.0kw Starter cranking RPMs to it. And WOW BIG number difference! The Mazda Upgraded Starter is BEAST!

Excuse my hand shaking on the last clip, ruff day....

Installed this last week....I CANT EVEN EXPRESS how much better this one is vs my old one....My car would sound like its dying trying to start (even after new coils, plugs and i removed the stock box with the dirty filter and put in an aem) so i put this one in and it starts every time hot or cold in 1 second.

The AutoZone/AAP starters are just as good as the upgraded starters -- Don't waste ya money on the expensive upgraded starter this one works just as good with lifetime warranty. The starter is so easy to replace that even if this one dies and i get a new one its like a 20min job.

I would beg to differ lol
Look at post 80, clearly the upgraded starter out performs the AZ/AAP one. It's still better than the shitty one though, no doubt.

Mazda upgraded starter > Az/Aap starter > Mazda 04-05 starter

Well I got back from the dealer this morning, I took my 8 in for the compression test!

After about 2 hours waiting the tech came out to tell me that my RX8 did not pass the compression test. But told me that they already talked to Mazda and had a new engine on the way. They also said that they are getting me a new clutch pedal that is also covered by Mazda.

I am also going to have them put in the new upgraded starter from Mazda when they are doing every thing else they gave me a price of $330.00 installed so I thought that was a fair price.

Over all I can't be more happy with how Mazda and the local dealer here handle this problem. I did not have to pay any thing for the test today.. They did not give me any fuss what so ever, They said it should only take about a week to get every thing in and a few days in the shop and then my 8 will be like new!!!

For a new RX8 owner this sure makes me feel a lot better about my choice to get this car, Can't wait to get every thing done and back on the road!!!

Yes sir, that is the scanner I got. It seems a little "slow" to read data, but I think the "slow" part is cause of the car. When I was looking at live data on a 00 thundra, it was a little slower. Overall I'm happy with the purchase, Mainly cause I can monitor things while I drive, like coolant/air/cat temps, misfires, ect... U get the idea. It comes with a disc and cable to connect to ur pc to print stuff but I never tried to use it, so can't comment on that feature. It also records live data feed but it's not really what I expected it to be. It records all values like every 5sec up to 40 spaces, there are 3 spots allowing u to record 3 sessions. If you like I can get some video up of all it's features and how it works.

I'm trying to decide between this or the Actron 9580 (or even 9185)

I use Harbor Freight stuff and they're "mostly okie", decision decision.

Not to hijack this topic but you can order an ELM327 Bluetooth OBD port on ebay or Amazon for around $30. Download the android market program called Torque for free (or $5 for the paid version) and it will pretty much duplicate all the functions of the Harbor Freight reader for a lot less money. The ELM327 will transmit and display OBDII port data real time to your android 2.2 phone via bluetooth. It will also allow you to transmit your data for downloading and printing . It will also read and reset trouble codes .

The "Torque" program is only android - no iphone. However, when you buy the ELM327 adapter, it comes with a number of programs on a disk that you can load onto a laptop. As long as the laptop has bluetooth, it will talk with the ELM327 and those programs will do diagnostics and real-time data sending. There's a USB version of the ELM327 if you don't want to go the bluetooth route. There's some youtube videos showing how this thing works.

I wouldn't......$330 vs 80 buck + lifetime warranty and it works the same? Ill stay with the AAP.

And another thing -- I didnt get the AutoZone starter so i dont know what sell vs what AAP sells.

You have the Logworks iphone diagnostic software but you need the Innovate Motorsports OBD interface to collect data and send it to your iphone. That adapter looks like it costs $179. A USB ELM327 costs $30 but, in your case, you'll have to use a laptop to collect and display the data (since you don't have an android phone).

Agree to disagree then?

Can you post video of the AAP starter in action? Then people can compare all different types, to help in their decision when having to buy a new one.

I bought a Bosch mazda reman, can not remember from where. It was around $300. My car is my DD, so it is very convenient that i do not have to purchase a new starter every year, (AKA AAP autozone whatever), even though they might be warrantied.

People pay a higher premium for convenience.

Who said my starter was gonna fail in a year? The stock starter worked for years before it started hard starting and thats after 5+ years.

No one did, calm your ponies. You get what you pay for, i was never satisfied with the slow starting of the stock starter. Even when my car had 17k miles, now it has 50k.

It is rather embarrassing to me having to need to crank the car for 6 seconds to get her going.
