Need to replace oil sensor, help!

My oil light came on recently in my 04 RX8. Dealership checked everything then seemed to blame a faulty oil sensor. I'm trying to find a step by step on how to locate/change it and can't seem to find anything. Anyone know where I should be looking? I'm a fairly useless mechanic, but I'm feeling ambitious.

Thanks

what the hell, when your oil light comes on it means you need oil, why take it to the dealership? just add oil ASAP

There was a batch of faulty sensors in early production -

What year is your car?

I shouldn't have to ask.....

Thought I put the year in the post, guess I missed it. It's an 04. Oil light started by coming on for a minute every 20 minutes or so, but is now a constant.

Cheers

it's in your oil pan. jack up the left front side of the car, add a stand for safety, and drop your oil pan. You'll find it hanging out in there.... order a new gasket with the sensor to save you trouble in case you rip the existing one when you drop the pan... (pretty sure there's a gasket there)

I would not recommend an entry level mechanic to replace this oil pan any more than I would recommend you to post non-DIY threads in the DIY forum area

How can you tell him to install a new gasket?

Please don't guess at answers in the Tech threads.....

They don't sell the sensor as a part - it comes with a new pan, and of course, ain't cheap.

A common prob with the replacement is putting the sealant in some of the bolt holes - when you crank on the bolt, the hydraulic pressure of the goop CRACKS the alloy housing!

But like Dozer said, sounds like low oil.

Had this problem on my 04 when I bought it a few years ago. I bought a used oil pan, slapped it on and hadn't had a problem since. Get an oil pan and have it installed/DIY.

I dropped my pan when I swapped it out for the GReddy a while back. the swap was easy enough... just couldn't remember specifically whether or not I RTV'd or gasketted it....

Seriously don't care whether or not the part is available individually or not. Anyone with half a brain is going to have to at least try to order one...

http://onlinemazdaparts.com/parts/20...20PAN%20BAFFLE

Is it not part of the baffle? Hard to tell from the picture... $20 is far better than $150
