I was also wondering when getting a new flash will the dealer be able to see (electronically) my cz unit if it is turned "off", shouldn't the cz unit be transparent when they hook up the wds program , and allow them to see the latest flash in my pcm?

'scuse me! (sidles in...) Has anybody who previously had the brief "clacking" (for lack of better description) noise at ~ 7000 RPM under WOT, that has recently had the N flash done notice the absence of that noise now?

I'm pretty concerned if that noise is detonation, my engine isn't liking it. (currently at M flash)

If the sound you are talking about was coming in at 6250 rpm then it is probably the intake ports opening. Mine used to make a little rattle sound, then much louder induction roar and a definite surge in power....now on the N flash it doesnt do that at all. No noise, no surge....I will say it does feel healthier in the mid-range than it did before, and it is VERY smooth to redline. The new gas cap must have fixed my CEL, the light when off yesterday, and has not come back.

a friend of mine made a before and after run with his g-tech (just for the hell of it!) and there was a difference... his car is stock.
the run after the N flash resulted in 0.2secs better time for the 1/4mile, although he had more wheelspin, resulting in a worse 0-60time... at least it showed the acceleration was much harder

I've never used a gtech, and I know you can't say accurately what the horsepower is with one, but it should be quite accurate for side-by side comparison. One thing though, does it compensate for ambient temp? If not, did your friend make the runs in similar temp conditions?

How could that happen? Think about it for a minute....

You should start over though, with a new baseline to see what the N flash changed for your car.

I called two dealerships in the Raleigh, NC (Millennia and Southern States).....neither of them are aware of a "N" flash...and yes I spent a lot of time telling them "N" as in Nancy not "M" as in Mary.

Neither of the dealers are aware of this new PCM flash "N"...both clueless. What can I show them to prove to them that a new flash exists? Any help would be great.

Under my N Flash- the Mazda work order read- "cutomer states -lack of power/hard starting" perform MSPO4 (N) update
Hope this helps--because it indeed fix my above two issues--in fact it even SOUNDS better-

what you need to say is " i believe my pcm needs an update. What calibration level is your WDS at curently?" if they are at 35.5 or later than they have the proper flash file for N.

also if your VIn falls into the range print this Technical Service Bulletin flash file names are on page 4 at the bottom

Wink

Got the N flash today also (at least I think it was N flash) along with 15K checkup. Oil needle sweeps with brake tap test - so at least M level. I was updated from probably K or earlier - whatever the car was delivered with a year ago. Service guy wasn't familiar with "N" but I should have asked what version WDS software but didn't think to. Anyway, I agree with all fizzer's comments a few posts back. Smoother idle - much better (or at least smoother) low end torque. Less RPM and clutching required on takeoff. Crappy weather here today and traffic coming back from dealer so not able to evaluate anything else but so far very happy with the way it feels (although I was happy the way it felt before

Just got "N" flashed today. The car definetly seems more responsive. I dont want to say more torque, then people will want to have dyno proof which I dont think is there.

I agree shifts seem smoother and and more precise.

The bog above 6k RPM is gone.

The throttle seems more linear. Seems like the car used to jerk more in low speed 1st and 2nd gear while rolling/idleing speed. Thats now gone.

Also, when driving if you took you foot off the pedal it seems to jerk a bit a first. That is gone now, it is a smooth transition from on throttle to off.

No mileage report. I only drove it 25 miles.

All in all Im one happy camper.

Hey Cam, was this a regular checkup? Or did you specifically ask for the update?

I asked for it.

A+ for University Mazda.

I specifically made an appointment online. I provide the TSB #'s

I stated I wanted:

The "N" Flash.
Brake Pad replacement
2 rattles fixed

All were done.

Dropped it off yesterday at 1.
They rented me a car from Enterprise (no charge to me of course).
Picked her up today at 3:30.

Oh and I my oil changed. Paid for that.

They did a great job on my two rattles. They machined the rotors and replaced the pads. I didnt think the brakes would be done because of course yesterday on the test drive with the tech they didnt squeal (Murphys Law).

They changed them anyway.

The dealership won't void your warranty for having an aftermarket exhaust and midpipe, however they will not in their system that you replaced your cat with the midpipe, and this could definitely cause an issue in the future if you have any check engine lights. My dealership refused to work on the car because of some aftermarket parts without first having authorization in the amount of $500 dollars. IMO I would put the cat back on til after your visit.

I couldn't tell much of a difference when I got mine back

Actually, I had a stock rental RX8 and it seemed faster than my modded one (I had the intake and exhaust)....I bet the loaner was N- flashed. It was pretty noticeable.

My first full tank after N flash ( lost A odometer reading due to battery replacement ) I got 16.7 mpg. This is 1 to 2 mpg lower than normal but it was all short trips with no hwy.

This may be out of ignorance, but I think that the 5M and 6M stand for the transmission/gearbox setup of the car. 5 or 6 speed manual transmissions. It is very possible I am blatantly wrong however.

I just got off the phone with Mazda North American. They told me that the N "does not add power" It only helps with the hard start problem. What you guys think? Mazda told me that they wont reflash mine under warranty. That I need to wait for them to cover it. THey said they could do it and charge me $45.
