You can buy the RX8 5 speed transmissions on ebay ... There are a few that have imported them from Japan to the US . This is the same transmission (essentially) as what was in the last of the RX7s but with all the right stuff on them to bolt right in without any modification.
Been running one on my (350whp) setup for over a year .

Really, the tranny is found on the base jdm rx8 and its dirt cheap in japan

What about the sensors? Any repin required if using it on s1?

time to source one, as I'm doing a AT -> MT swap, might as well get a beefier tranny than the made-by-glass Aisin 6MT

So how would the JDM 5 speed compare to S2 transmission?

The RX-8 Transmission isn't built by Mazda. It's built by Aisin-Toyota and it's called the AZ6. It's the same gearbox used by the Mx-5, the Honda S2000, the Toyota Altezza / IS200 and the Nissan S15 Silvia.
Nissan Silvia owners say the gearbox is good for no more than 400hp. Not sure how that translates to SR20dett torque figures, i suppose around 450/500Nm.
Same gearbox in S2000, RX-8 and IS200?

List of Aisin transmissions (Manual transmissions)
AZ6 — 6-speed
Honda S2000, Mazda Miata/MX-5/Roadster, Mazda RX-8, Toyota Altezza/Lexus IS200, Toyota 86/Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ

The model name doesnt make them all the same

i.e. JNTSA ....

plus, name any car with anywhere near that torque level that ever came with one, evdrything you listed is low torque output

NA RX8s are better off with the S2 6 spd ...

.

Hella late bump :P
Bigger question adapting the tranny's !? in the process of making a 1" adapter plate but just realized the rx-8 spline shaft wont reach the clutch disc, I have hooked up a Fidanza flywheel, rx-8 clutch disc (both 1j and rx-8 clutch disc's are 240mm or 9,1/2") then stage 2 F1 1j pressure plate,,,,,,, think ill need to make a spacer between the 1J and the 1J's flywheel to push the clutch assembly closer to the spline shaft? has anyone got this far / had this problem?

Not going to work for long without a pilot bearing end support either, but it's a bad idea regardless.

Use RX-8 5 sp Transmission, it's basically a RX-7 transmission with bellhousing that fits to RX-8's Rear Iron, it's directly bolt on to S1 no modifications necessary

S2 Transmission on S1 required you to change the neutral / Backup switch connector to S1 version, just cut the old one and mate to new, that's the only mod u need.

Im sourcing a 5MT tranny right now, should be here next month, gonna take pics when it's here

Nycgps, please keep us updated! I've been toying with the idea of running a 5 speed for a while now, very interested in the swap.

Thanks,
Drew

Also interested.

I'm just hoping my S1 transmission survives long enough for me to scrape together money for a dogbox solution but a 5-speed RX-8 trans might have to be put in if I can't afford that route.

I don't think I've really seen anyone at 500+RWHP with these things so I guess I'll find out how long it takes for it to grenade... hopefully it survives at least dyno tuning and like one event...

Trying to find one ... but it's quite hard to find one cuz

- in Japan, not much people get the 5 MT, cuz it only available for standard power , BASE MODEL of rx-8. so they are pretty rare in the first place
- even if it does exist, it has at LEAST 150K KM, it's about 120K miles? and shipping from japan gonna cost at least 500 bux so Im not gonna take that risk ... unless I really have to

there are way more 6 MT to pick (duh) with less miles for cheap (no one wants a tranny), so whatever shows up I think it's worth it, I will get it, 5 mt or 6mt

Im trying to find a decent one that hasnt been run for 150K miles ... for a fair price, I mean if anything I can always get a beat up one, pull it out and replace the gear myself, as long as it hasn't been chew up completely I should be able to get it fix for cheap.

I don't think even the Rx-7 stock box can save you from 500+ rwhp, u might considered one of the hks box or whatever dogbox u can find.

Yes a new S2 6 spd is quite a but less than a new 5 spd, but the 5 spd is not a standard USDM part system item so this is likely why. The used JDM 5-spd box I mentioned was listed at $300 though. It's not a good choice for NA due to the steeper gearing differences and IMO it's not really strong enough for FI either, but can get by as long as you're not beating on it hard & heavy like a drag trans. Thats why I didn't buy it. Ultimately I'd rather drop the cash for a hardcore gearset swap if I ever move on to that next level. Until then the S2 6-spd will (hopefully) suffice.
