It's very, very loud. I have a race catback made up for my car that's just a straight pipe with a resonator. It's fine for autocross, but I always swap back to my street exhaust afterwards.
Here's a video of my co-driver in the car at the Dixie national tour earlier this year (race exhaust is on the car):

If you want a deeper sounding exhaust, I'd save your money and either get the Mazdaspeed version 2 catback (dual muffler) or the Corksport! I've run both of these on my RX-8 and they sound awesome.

Yeah... i would say do a cat-delete pipe before a muffler delete. Midpipe is an easier swap, cheaper, and will gain you as much horsepower as you can without going F/I. It'll be loud and shoot flames... "Its win-freakin'-win baby!"
But... you'll be emissions illegal and harming the environment.

If you're on a tight budget and still want an exhaust that gives you thrills and chills I would suggest the HKS Hi-Power exhaust. It's one of the loudest mufflers for the RX-8 but coupled with the stock cat the sound is incredible. However, you may not like the looks of the HKS Hi-Power since it's single sided.
Here's a YouTube clip.

Yes. The mufflers play a huge roll in reducing the noise+rasp and changing the exhaust tone. I'm not the most experienced guy on the forums, but I don't think I have heard of anyone actually doing what you're trying to do. Most seem to use the single exit HKS how power or Racing Beat race exhaust, which both have a small muffler, but are still pretty loud, even with a cat.

come on!
Guys I did allot of reading on here before just deciding to go out and get the muffler delete. One... Not half as loud as people on here say it is. Two... Take the information you get on here with a grain of salt. It's not like it used to be where people would give useful advice and information. There should be a troll button on here.

Somebody did ring the clueless noob button so I came a runnin' to see the latest addition ... nothing is loud when you're already deaf from exposing yourself to excessive noise levels. A self-fulfilling prophesy I suppose
