Getting my rx8 thuesday!!!

Alright im getting my 3rd 8 on thuesday its a mint 2005 back rx8. And i wanted to know should i wait for the OEM coils to burn before I put my BHR kit. So i get i bit more millage before trowing away good coils?

Just install it. IMHO, the only reason to wait (which I'm doing) is if the OEM coils are fresh and your engine core warranty still has time left.

I would wait.
Why do you think you need BHR coils anyway?

You can find OEM replacements now that are way cheaper.
Two sets of those will likely last you the life of that car

It's a 2005 man .... it's 7 years old! How many more years do you think you are going to get????

What's the usual failure scenario? When my coils failed at 5 years, 42k, two blew at once and I barely limped the 5 miles or so to the dealer. If that happened at the start of my commute home (17 miles) or on a trip it would have been an even bigger pain in the butt. So once I hit 8 years (when there'll only be 25-30k on the new coils) my plan is to go BHR for reliability.

I have the BHR set already its a upgrade i was planning for my old rx8. But Ken has a good poin my engine core is on warranty untill march 2013 so ill wait. Thx Ken i was forgetting that part o.O

The point is that its a seven year old car that the OP is putting new BHR coils on ... I though he might elaborate on what his intentions might be for the vehicle.

It's his third RX8 already and unless he just likes to have a bunch of cars sitting around doing nothing why would you spend 600 usd on a set of coils for another RX8.

Maybe the other ones are gone, I dunno but I wouldn't drop 600 usd on a 7 year old NA RX8 that wasn't going to be some sort of special project car/track car.

A 7 year old daily driver doesn't deserve BHR Coils and in fact may cause issues.
The jury is still out on the BHR ignition set IMO ..

My 8 year old DD sports car has BHR coils. What wrong with wanting reliability out of a 8 year old car that you drive daily? How will these coils cause issues on a maintained car?

First thing is you have no idea if this is a properly maintained car.

Second I own a 2005 MT as well so with that out of the way.

I've had problems with my BHR Coils since I first got them, the first time Ray replaced the boots on the leads to the newer stronger style.
That made made some improvement as the car would start now.

This is when my car had only 44,000 Km's on it (around the year 2008 ish), and no I do not have compression numbers.

After that I got quite good at swapping the coils in and out and the OEM coils always started the car better in cold and hot conditions.

I left the BHR coils out until I went boosted ...I've also since purchased a Compression Tester. Hopefully this week I will get a chance to use it before I head back over seas for a few weeks.

None of this really matters the point is some cars have hard start issues with the BHR Coils in particular it seems cars with lower compression.
Seeing that this car is a 2005 the compression just might not be up to snuff.

By installing the BHR Coils he introduce hard start issues. This would not surprise me in the least.

Sure we can go back and forth on stuff like its not the coils its due to low compression or poor grounding ... the fact of the matter is its an older car and unless you are putting on lots of mileage you're likely to be better served with the OEM coils especially if you're NA.

In a few years the only thing left of that car will be the BHR Coils, sitting there by themselves at the edge of the junk yard looking for a new home.

It's unfortunate that I've only ever tried the BHR Coils because I suspect I would get the same behaviour from similar set-ups. Ray is also a top notch guy who has been nothing but awesome to me, so I feel a little bad about this review.
But it is what it is unfortunately.
