Not if you use Idemitsu.

 

If you add too much on a regular basis EG: 16oz/10 gallons of fuel you will reduce your plug life as it will tend to foul your plugs. Plugs are cheaper than motors though.

Other con is pre-mix costs money.

 

I wrote to Idemitsu and asked them if I should use pre-mix for my totally stock 8. They replied no! They said pre-mix was only for cars that are raced, without OMP or catalytic converters.

Seems to me if Idemitsu had a chance to sell a few more bottles of pre-mix… they would. And I figure the guys who actually develop and test the pre-mix just might know a little more about it than some of the folks here. But hey, that's just me.

but uh, it begs the question as to why pre-mix is sold in gas stations. i regularly see race cars filling up at the local gas stations...

 

if you ran a business with no moral obligations, wouldn't you sell anything that a customer would buy? whether they needed it or not

Don't get me wrong, lots of guys use pre-mix and love it; many feel it makes their 8 run smoother, better, fill-in-the-blank.

I'm just saying that, according to Idemitsu, it's not recommended for a stock, non-modded, non-raced car with factory OMP and catalytic converter.

 

I Premix.

 

Marine grades (TCW-3) will poison the catalyst, and possibly the O2 sensor.

This thread is becoming redundant. Can we move this discussion over to the premix thread. There is good information there and many people that can answer your questions.

 

Read through this thread, though I did skip around a bit.

Is there anything I can use to premix that I can pick up locally? Or am I simply beter ordering a case of Idemitsu?

I always prefer to buy local, but I gotta do what I gotta do if I have to.

I have a question. Once I started using Idemitsu premix my avg mpg dropped ~2 mpg. I quit premixing and it went back to normal. Any idea why I would drop gas mileage? I've premixed with Pettit Proteck-R before and my mileage increased. I'm using 1/2 once per gallon. I went from 17.5~18 to 15~16 mpg.

 

Is it possible that Idemitsu don't want to get into legal trouble by telling people yes? such as damaged Cat. or other equipment since it is also possible they never tested with stock spec or was not designed with stock in mind.

i.e. I wrote to MazdaUSA asking if it is okay to use 5W30 (which has been discussed numerous time and we already know other countries' manual indicated 5W30 and 10W30), the answer I got from them is they can only recommand 5W20 and to avoid the warranty being void, better to use 5W20 because it is in the manual. Duh...

I've noticed my mileage has dropped recently too. Not immediately after I started premixing, but not too many tanks thereafter. I'm hoping it's the cold weather we've been having here.

I noticed it when I switched from valvoline to idemitsu recently. I put in the valvoline again at the last fill up, but so far it seems to be getting crappy mileage again. So I'm hoping it is the cold weather.

 

Although the Winter gasoline blend in the northern US has a higher volitility (Reid factor), and the colder/denser air also enhances combustion, pre-mix oil in these very cold temps tends to offset those advantages by its higher viscosity thru the fuel injectors. Consider that your manual transmission oil feels like molasses on cold mornings.

I meant to also add that as we know our rotaries have relatively low thermal mass, which is one reason we get poorer gas mileage all year long, and especially exasperated in Winter.

Hey everyone, I've been reading through this thread for the past few days and finally decided to begin Premixing. I have a 2005 with a little over 39k on her.

Anyways back on topic, I went out and bought a gallon of Lucas UCL as well as a quart of Mobil 1 2T 2stroke oil (JASO_FC rated)

Per Stealths early posts I mixed the 2 in a 50/50 ratio and portioned them out in 7 oz single serving bottles.

Now I havent added a bottle to the tank yet (decided to premix right after I filled up) But reading later posts it looks like OD and Jax dont recomend mixing Lucas and a JASO-FC oil. There are possible fuel pump filter issues

Now my main question is what exactly is the problem with mixing? what happens to the two fluids when they are mixed that possibly fouls the filters? I saw a lot of recommendations not to mix, but i didnt see anyone who had the answer as to what exactly happens when they are mixed.

Not sure it was ever confirmed that mixing is what caused the problem - just use premix if you want to be sure

 

i cant comment on the mixing. but my fuel pump just came out at 80k miles. i have been premixing since ~25k miles..

i did not have the goop that was shown... the bottom sock filter was not what i would call clean, but it offered no restriction to fuel flow..

i have been 5 oz per tank..
