Likely to hurt mileage... Since putting load on the engine would force it out of closed loop anyway, I don't see how any power improvements could be had here.

Runs richer, keeps the cat temperature down (likely to improve longevity), and well....idles better.

 

Hey Zoom44 am I reading you right are you saying this is a flash you'd avoid?

 

I wanna know what your AFR is at 70mph, currently it runs about 14.7-14.8 for me. I do notice a serious dropoff the higher the speed after 70 due to the load. At 80mph your at freaken 4 grand.

Frankly, since 70mph is the legal speed limit nearly everywhere, above that I don't feel bad if mileage falls off.

im not suggesting to anyone tpo avoid it. i think most everyone should get it. people who experience any symptoms at all should definetly get it. its going to be a recall so if you care about resale you will get it. some people are happy with the flash level they have and have no issues. they might want to no tget it. me im going to make sur ei know EXACTLY what it does before getting it.

Hey late? What was your gas mileage before you go the flash? I know you keep a close eye on it and have posted it somewhere but I am too lazy to search. To me it sounds like you are getting really good gas mileage. I never average over 19mpg on mixed driving and may have hit 22mpg on an all highway trip to FL.

 

before the flash, i was getting about 22 MPG on the highway on average, on those rare occasions that it was just me in the car, with little cargo, I could get 23 MPG. But that is all highway. Around town, I am lucky to get 16 MPG, but I have a lead foot.

let me see if i understand this correctly--after a certain time frame --over a certain speed(or rpm/load?) the a/f leans out a little. Correct? If that is correct then how on earth did the cat temp drop? Maybe more oil? Or did the a/f actually richen some? Im confused here. I wonder if track behavior would change also/

I want mine to burn more oil - the stuff the dealer puts in the crankcase that is! Easier to burn off their overfills than having to suction it out like I've had to do. Never had to use the skinny catheter that my oil change kit for my boat came with until I bought the 8. Goes right down the dip stick tube.

I took my 8 in to the shop on June 20th because I was having hard starts about 20% of the time (taking 3-4 seconds to finally catch and fire up). The said there was a new flash out, so hopefully I got the very latest one. The car ran fine for about a week, but it's right back to doing the same thing. I've got an '04 automatic with 39K miles. And yes, I've got the new battery and starter from a flood 6 months ago. So basically, I've noticed no difference in operation for my car.

if i have ubderstood correctly, the AF richening + drop in cat temp = even worse milage. So what on earth are they playing at? Its bad enough as it is!

 

well this is also the area where the second injectors come online... i doubt the difference in mileage is much....

Ahh.... going in for my flash tomorrow and I have a feeling my service dept is gonna be dicks about giving it to me since when I went in his responce was "We only do those if WE see the problem". Re-Reading this thread and some of the other problems asociated with it will give me some leverage. I've had at times ruff idle not constant but its comes and goes, that and as someone just posted about the engine taking a few seconds to start, feels like I'm killing the engine at times.

Oh also Swoope, started to do some small research on my car.. there have been sooooo many TSB's not done to this car (there isnt alot true but damn). I'm hoping to force them to find a service record of my car and do any all TSB's that need to be done. I have rust on my rear door sil's (its small and only noticed since I was on my knee's drying my car) and there was a TSB about it from earl last year. -fumes- I have a carfax report on my car and all logged in usages seem to be at my dealership but where done every 3 months.. oil change only anyone meh thinks so..?! lol bah...!

 

You can't force the dealer to do TSB's. A TSB isn't a recall. Too many people here think they are one and the same.

Be nice to your dealer and you may find he'll be nice to you in return.

 

what gomes said is true.... tsbs are to fix issuse with cars... i have a 04... never had brake noise.... did not get the tsb for brakes... i did not bitch about the rust on the rotors..
i have never flooded... so i dont have the starter.. it is cause and effect... note to all... bitching is just bitching.... if you have a real issue address it...

if you just read about an issue but dont have it dont waste there time...

Ahh thanks for the info, this is my first real car purchase so dealing with all this is new to me. Previous cars where beaters so I just ran those into the ground and with my 8 yeah I wanna keep her running foreva. Hopefully I'll run into the guy whom I first dealt with when I brought my car back for the A/C issue (had a small pin sized hole in the a/c condensor) he was nice as hell. Again thanks I hate being one of those customers, but be nice to have a sound mind with my car.

there is a sticky thread with link to the website where you can get PDF versions of the recalls and TSBs. but here is another way . go to mazda usa and go to owners register there. yoiu'll need your VIN. it'll show you any recalls that your car has been involved in that have not been done.
