Anybody here sort out this 2nd gear issue fully?
Mine only grinds when its cold (40 degrees farenheit and below in late fall and winter) 1st to 2nd. Once you drive it for 15-20 minutes. No issues.
To avoid the problem, I try to pause between 1st and 2nd. Works, but drives me nuts. The other way is using literally one finger to pull it down from 1st to 2nd thereby not pulling it to the left towards me and down, which is instinctive.
Did the tranny oil thing and, no dice.

i had the same thing happen to me expect from 3rd to 4th gear at high rpms.....
went to dealer for oil change and also b/c warrenty about to be gone and told them about the grinding.....pick up the car they said they tested it and did find some noise coming from the tranny but told me to come back for proper inspection....
came back the next week where they called mazda tech about it.....a week later they called back saying if its abuse they wont do it under warrenty.... (from 3rd to 4th gear?)
well they took down the trans. and said they found "something burned" i dont know what they meant by burned..so now its been almost month and still waiting....oh last week they said they ordered parts for the car.....

Lots of similar tranny stories in the Tech section.
The attached shift-fork info may be helpful.
However, after 2 years and 40,000mi of complaining to my Mazda dealer about stiff shifting and grinding when cold, they still haven't admited there's a problem.
Good luck!

RE: Grinding into 2nd
I've had that problem on my old '04 (that had the bad apex seals).
I got the syncros replaced, and it ran great. It took them two weeks to do, but well worth it.

I have a grind ONLY shifting from 6th to 5th at +7K rpm. Also reverse has locked up on me as well (couldn't shift into any other gear or neutral). the note listed above covers two of the issues i've had so it must be a bad fork yet the dealer refuses to accept the fact that something is wrong. It doesn't bother me that much considering its 5th gear however, I do have a paper trail to back me up.
