Thanks guys I went and checked my gas cap and wiped it off in case there was dirt or something causing a bad seal. Went for a lil spin and it didn't come on so we'll see. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. One more thing does the gas cap cause both of those codes?

I have been getting the P0456 for a while now and the Mazda dealer said it was probably some type of emission pump (I though smog pumps were only in pre efi carbed vehicles?).. and I even mentioned the gas cap and they acted like I was crazy.

Most of the time Mazda dealers will act crazy on these types of things with the economy this way. If I remember correctly Mazda dealerships get reinbursed quartly for warrantied items etc. So if they are in a hole, they might try to make you wait and then come to the conclusion you came to right off the bat, just to save them money. Im sure a gas cap is no big deal but with remanufactured engines it happens.

But my car isn't under warranty- save for the engine.

P0456 is a gas tank pressure leak, usually a loose/bad gascap.

Check the 'Tech' forum under 'CEL' codes......

Is there any aftermarket gas cap sold anywhere that would solve this problem?

I've thought about just trying junk yard gas caps to see if any work... maybe even grab some from the lost gas cap box at the local gas station.

It seems to take 4-7 days for the CEL to come on again after clearing it.
