Brake Service

I had a couple warranty issues dealt with today at my Mazda Dealership. My main one however was that my brakes continue to squeal even after the updates.

Their solution? A $90 (Plus tax) brake "service". The continued to give me heck for not having this done sooner (at 24k kilometers. I'm at 35k now).

They say they will lubricate and clean the brakes.

I think this is a bunch of crap and am not about to pay over $100 all in for it.

Anyone have any suggestions? Should I go ahead with this?

Thanks.

O f course you should service your brakes,at least once per year or about every 24k kms.If this service is done properly it will keep brake performance close to new and extend brake life for normal use.The best thing to do is train yourself to perform the service. If you do it properly it takes about an hour.

get it in writing that they guarantee them not to squeal afterwards and if they do bounce the CC charges

I agree with the dealer tech that the brakes should have been serviced by now. I've often found that various brake bits tend to seize over time, and periodically cleaning and re-lubing does a world of good. As others have said, you can do it yourself. But if you're not mechanically inclined, the $100 is not outrageous. I do a brake cleaning every spring and fall when I change from/to winter tires.

The bad news about this is that it may not get rid of the brake squeal. If anything, it might get rid of it for only a very short period of time. So while I recommend doing it, I don't think it is necessarily the proper diagnosis for your brake squealing.

Thanks for the replies. Okay, I agree and will have the brakes serviced. I'm going to request that I get some sort of assurance that this will fix the problem so when it returns I'll at least have some recourse.
